Hi-Fi+
VerifiedMagazine
Hi-Fi+ enjoys a hard-won reputation as one of the most insightful and influential high-end audio and music publications written in the English language. As the magazine’s motto suggests, Hi-Fi+ covers all things involved in faithfully “reproducing the recorded arts,” and does so with a just-right combination of appropriate seriousness and sharp-edged (though always good-natured) wit. The list of top-notch Scandinavian pianists just keeps growing. Take Johan Lindvall. A relative newcomer to the scene, he has played with saxophonist Mette Henriette on two albums for ECM and released two previous albums with his trio, in which he is backed by Adrian Myhr who plays double bass and Andreas Skår Winther on drums.
Revival Audio Sprint 3
Receiving a product for review from a company you haven’t interacted with before is always slightly tense. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to examine something into which the designer has invested their heart and soul. You must compare the materials you’ve been given with the actual object or objects in the rack. And you can’t even ride a motorbike while jumping out of a helicopter wearing someone else’s face. The Revival Audio Sprint 3 is one such mission.
Transrotor Bellini TMD, TRA 9, Figaro
Despite being established over half a century ago, Transrotor remains relatively unknown in the UK. If the Transrotor Bellini TMD turntable (with TRA-9 arm and Figaro cartridge from the brand) is anything to go by, it’s our loss. Starting in 1971, founder Jochen Räke began as a distributor for Transcriptors and Michell turntables, only launching his own designs some years later. Transrotor designs weren’t distributed in the UK, so it hasn’t developed the following it has in its native Germany.
Burmester 232
Audio is evolving, and the Burmester 232 integrated amplifier leads the way. A well-known name in high-end audio—with products still in production dating back to 1980—Burmester also attracts customers through its automotive ventures. These clients have very different expectations for their audio equipment. Their demands more closely resemble what future audio buyers will seek on a broader scale. That means a product like the Burmester 232 prompts questions about audio within a wider context.
Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary
Over the last few years, we’ve seen a range of products that are loving tributes to models from decades ago. Nostalgia is a major market; whether appealing to those who admired the product in the past but couldn’t afford it, or simply tapping into a broader desire to nostalgically revisit a time when things were at least differently terrible. At first glance, the relaunched Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary appears much the same.
