September 3, 2026 By Carol Britton Meyer There was about a 26 percent voter turnout for the Sept. 1 state primary in Hingham, with 4,106 voting Democratic and 1,128 Republican – for a total of 5,234 ballots cast from among the town’s approximately 19,750 registered voters. By comparison, 4,100 total voters cast ballots in the 2024 state primary, according to Town Clerk Carol Falvey, with slightly lower total voter registrations that year.

Robert “Rip” Amontea, age 76, passed away peacefully the morning of August 27, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Amontea of Hingham, MA, daughter, Deva Ruggiero, and her husband, Matt Ruggiero of North Providence, RI, son, Adam Amontea and his wife, Aja Amontea of Scituate, MA, and his beloved grandchildren, Rhys Amontea, Wren Amontea and Shay Ruggiero. Robert was born on March 7, 1950, in Brooklyn, NY to Rocco and Natalina Amantea and had one older sister, Theresa.

September 2, 2026 Submitted By Geri Duff This barn at 32 Middle Street has had an interesting history. It was built as a boy’s school in 1829 at Hingham Centre. In 1861, it was moved aside and transformed into an Armory where, under Captain Luther Stephenson’s direction it was used to train militia for the Civil War. Moved again in 1875, it became an intermediate school.
