Abstract A perennial Chinese cultural myth equates the fall of a dynasty with the death of a musical tradition, particularly as embodied in the persons of court entertainers and courtesans. What does leadership look like in a world reshaped by AI, economic uncertainty, and increasingly borderless careers? That was one of the questions at the heart of the HKUST MBA team’s recent journey across Asia. The journey, with stops in Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, and Hong Kong connected with talented professionals exploring new possibilities for their careers. The question also surfaced in different forms: How to lead teams through disruption?

When students from three leading Asian universities come together to exchange ideas and experiences, learning goes beyond the classroom. In August, 12 HKUST Global Business (GBUS) students travelled to Tokyo for a study trip that combined cultural experiences, case-based learning, industry exposure, and cross-cultural exchange. A key highlight was the inaugural Global Enterprise and Management Student Summit (GEMS) held at Waseda University.

Team Wildcard, comprising finance undergraduates Jamie WONG and Paco LAU, together with Ani YEUN (Economics and Finance) and Ryan MAK (Quantitative Finance), won the Global Final of the GAIP Insurance Innovation Competition 2026 in Singapore with their innovative student-focused micro-insurance solution –UniShield. After capturing the Hong Kong local title, the team reimagined UniShield from a local student insurance bundle into an APAC-scale lifecycle protection platform.
