Three journalists from Africa are being honored through the Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards, a story contest presented by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia. The winning stories, covering migration, youth sports and maternal health, are being recognized for helping expand knowledge about Africa and highlight positive change on the continent.

Nieves is a 2026 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award winner. José J. Nieves is a Cuban journalist and the editor-in-chief of elTOQUE, an independent media outlet that has become an essential source of information in one of the world’s most repressive media environments. Leading a transnational newsroom from exile, Nieves has helped pioneer data-driven journalism, public-service tools and sustainable news business models.

Salih is a 2026 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award winner. Zeinab Mohammed Salih is a Sudanese freelance journalist whose on-the-ground reporting of Sudan's most recent civil war is providing rare, independent documentation of one of the world's deadliest and least reported-on humanitarian crises. Her work, published in The Guardian, the Financial Times, The Economist, the BBC and more, has helped bring international attention to the atrocities of the conflict.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) today announced its 2026 Knight International Journalism awardees. José J. Nieves, an exiled media leader from Cuba who is the editor-in-chief of innovative news site elTOQUE, and Zeinab Mohammed Salih, a courageous freelance reporter covering the atrocities of the war in her home country of Sudan, will be honored at the 2026 ICFJ Awards Dinner.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) this week announced that Julie Pace, senior vice president and executive editor of The Associated Press, has joined its Board of Directors. Pace leads AP’s global news coverage, overseeing a team reporting across over 100 countries. Under her leadership, AP has significantly increased its digital news offerings for media and technology customers, along with its direct-to-consumer platforms.

“Forest is Life – But Nigeria’s Last Rainforest is Falling Fast” explored how illegal logging, mining and agriculture expansion were destroying one of Nigeria’s last major rain forests. Reporting by the Center for Collaborative Journalism, led by Uchenna Igwe, produced a groundbreaking investigation with support from ICFJ+, which supplied the satellite imagery and technical expertise. Reporters uncovered irrefutable evidence that once pristine forests had been reduced to stumps and mud paths.

This initiative recognizes African journalists whose reporting helps close knowledge gaps about Africa on Wikipedia. A journalist's work can end up shaping the knowledge of a topic for millions of people, far beyond the original outlet's reach, if their piece is cited in a Wikipedia article.
