By the end of 2023, many had completed their studies, and their temporary stay in host countries was drawing to a close. For many, returning to Afghanistan was no longer a safe option, as restrictions on women's education and employment had deepened. Reliable information is essential, but it is most useful when it reflects the realities people face. Access to reliable, relevant information can help people considering work abroad assess opportunities, understand potential risks, and prepare for migration.

The people who will shape migration policy within two decades from now are already among us. They are studying law, economics, political science, journalism, demography, or international relations. Some of them are already beginning their professional careers in public administration, civil society or international organisations, and consider migration as their primary topic of interest. For others, migration may be a part of their future professional development.

But that path took an unexpected turn: while working in Kyrgyzstan, Safiq found himself stranded and unable to leave his employer or arrange his return home. His employer had refused to let him go; and the situation escalated when he was threatened with serious harm if he contacted local authorities.

Early this year, ICMPD started the implementation of two Demand-Driven Facility (DDF) actions in Ghana, one with the Births and Deaths Registry (BDR), the other with the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB), under the EU-funded FMM West Africa Phase II project, with additional funding from the Denmark-funded SMIWA project. The two actions look very different at first glance. One is about making sure children are on the books from the day they are born.

The Knowledge Paper is the first in a new series of Budapest Process knowledge products entitled “Reintegration is complicated: frameworks and outcomes in the Silk Routes Region.” It is an outcome of the discussions of the Thematic Working Group’s meeting on Return and Reintegration, which is co-chaired by Bangladesh, Iraq and Türkiye; as well as subsequent exchanges within the Budapest Process.

For Arun*, a document check at the Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in Batticaloa helped prevent this from happening. After receiving a job offer, travel information and instructions to make a payment, Arun sought advice from MRC counsellors before proceeding. The documents were reviewed and found to be fraudulent. Following the counselling, Arun did not make the payment or continue with the travel arrangements and remained in his work as a teacher.

true Login The Migrant Resource Centre in Baghdad, along with Iraq’s Ministry of Migration and Displacement  and the Ministry of Interior, highlighted the experiences and challenges of victims of human trafficking and the importance of access to accurate information to protect their rights and safety.

The MMDP 2027 will take place from 5 April to 24 June 2027 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. The programme is funded by the European Union through the Migration Partnership Facility (MPF) of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). Since 2013, the MMDP has provided government officials and migration practitioners with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to strengthen migration management and develop evidence-based policy responses.

Under this year’s theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” this year’s theme drew attention to the growing threat of trafficking for forced criminality, including online scam operations and other cyber-enabled crimes. The joint commemoration was organised by Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, UNODC, IOM, UNHCR, ILO, SSDO, ICMPD and IRARA, bringing together representatives from federal ministries, law enforcement and criminal justice institutions, development partners, and civil society.
