We make repair tools for a living, so when something breaks at home, we reach for our own kits. But one problem kept coming up. You know the jobs. Clearing hair out of the vacuum but the screw is miles deep. Swapping that loose outlet and the terminal screws are crazy tight. Troubleshooting your finicky coffee maker and you need way more reach and torque than you expect. Around the house, we kept running into repairs that lived in the space between our precision kits and the power drill in the garage.

For years, Repair Cafés and Fixit Clinics have quietly helped people fix what they already own. Volunteers gather in libraries, community centers, and maker spaces. Someone walks in with a broken lamp or a dead laptop and walks out with it working again. These events happen around the world, gems of local connection and physical restoration. And if we’re honest, they’re a bit hard to find. Information about these decentralized events is scattered across dozens of sites and calendars.

Thanks to the EU, tech companies must now provide repair manuals for their products. But there’s a huge gap between creating a manual, and creating a good manual. Some companies (we’re looking at you, Mackie) elevate the manual to a joyful art form that’s as entertaining as it is useful. Others excrete the minimal possible documentation with such resentment that it feels like they hate the user.

In case you missed it, there is now a Trump phone. Yes, really. And this week, we got to take it apart. A couple of weeks ago I got my first look at the Trump Mobile T1 courtesy of NBC News over a brief Zoom call. My first impression: the Trump Mobile T1 looked exactly like 2024’s HTC U24 Pro. But without access to the hardware, it was impossible to tell whether the T1 was a 1:1 copy of the U24 Pro or if deeper differences lay hidden inside.
