In contexts of exile and censorship, several independent media outlets have turned to creating original products — leveraging their brand identity, analytical expertise, or connection to specific audiences.

When the term ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) debuted in the U.N.-sponsored “Who Cares Wins” report, it wasn’t virtue signaling. It was a warning: Ignoring climate change, social issues, or corporate governance questions risks undermining long-term company value.

When you ask ChatGPT or other AI assistants to help create misinformation, they typically refuse, with responses like “I cannot assist with creating false information.” But our tests show these safety measures are surprisingly shallow – often just a few words deep – making them alarmingly easy to circumvent. We have been investigating how AI language models can be manipulated to generate coordinated disinformation campaigns across social media platforms.

Desirée Yépez is a journalist, fact-checker and author. Yépez, who is from Ecuador and resides in Palo Alto, California, covers a variety of topics related to vulnerable communities and human rights. She is currently a managing producer of national news at Radio Bilingüe. Yépez spoke with IJNet about her background, the most difficult aspects of her job, Ecuador’s media environment, and more.
