Qld Labor leader set to be decided
Former Queensland premier Steven Miles looks set to run unopposed to lead Labor after the party’s defeat at the polls led to the Liberal National Party taking power. Miles confirmed he will nominate himself to lead the opposition in the next term of parliament when the Labor caucus meets on Tuesday and is expected to be voted in unanimously.
This data might signal an end to the LNP and ALP
The AES data also shows that the majority of people think the government will have neither a good nor a bad impact on the economy. This tells us the public understands many of our problems are big and systemic in nature rather than the result of one moron making a bad call. This suggests that the constant Lib-Lab blame game (‘It’s all the fault of the other party’) is not believed by voters, and probably contributes to the general dissatisfaction with Lib-Lab.
Reserve Bank tipped to hold interest rates despite inflation fall
The clear consensus of economists and the market is that the RBA board will keep the cash rate at 4.35 per cent at Tuesday’s meeting, given underlying inflation persists higher than they would like. But price growth has steadily declined in recent months, with headline inflation back within the RBA’s two to three per cent target range, aided by government energy bill rebates.
Govt set to scrap renewable energy scheme
The Queensland government is under pressure to reveal an alternative renewable energy scheme as it prepares to unveil a new cabinet after scrapping a controversial project. The Liberal National Party has hit the ground running since ending Labor’s nine-year reign, ditching as promised the previous government’s $12 billion Pioneer Burdekin pumped hydro project in central Queensland.
Man arrested in big cheese heist breakthrough
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers have arrested a 63-year-old man on suspicion of fraud by false representation and handling stolen goods. “The man was taken to a south London police station where he was questioned. He has since been bailed pending further inquiries. Inquiries remain ongoing,” police said.
Queensland cabinet to get stuck in after swearing-in
It will be straight to work for the newly sworn-in Queensland cabinet as Premier David Crisafulli’s government takes shape. Fresh from an election win, the 41st premier of Queensland will unveil his cabinet at Government House on Friday after flagging no changes to opposition portfolios during the campaign. Governor Jeannette Young will officially swear in MPs to their respective portfolios.
Mayor on notice, premier vows to clear council 'mess'
A controversial mayor is on notice after the Queensland premier vowed to clean up the “mess” at an embattled council in the state’s north. David Crisafulli on Thursday confirmed he had sought legal advice after ongoing friction at Townsville council, saying the city’s people “deserve so much better”. Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson had been served a show-cause notice in one of the Labor government’s final acts, detailing a plan to suspend him for 12 months.
Trump and Harris accuse each other of inciting division
The Republican former president focused on a comment by Democratic President Joe Biden that he said revealed the disdain Democratic leaders feel towards Trump’s supporters. “You can’t lead America if you don’t love Americans, and you can’t be president if you hate the American people,” Trump said in North Carolina, one of the largest of the seven swing states up for grabs in Tuesday’s presidential election.
Australia to build up missile and ammunition manufacturing
The federal government will partner with Lockheed Martin and lay down $316 million to build a weapons manufacturing plant able to produce 4000 guided, multiple-launch rocket systems each year, starting later in the decade. It will work with Thales to manufacture 155mm artillery shells at a Commonwealth-owned facility in Benalla, Victoria, that will produce 15,000 rounds a year by 2028 and can scale up to 100,000 annually.
