We spend our days (and nights) checking out new (and old) restaurants and bars, visiting galleries, museums and markets, and attending events in town and the Winelands, hand-picking the best to share with our readers. No establishment is too fancy or too insignificant for us: if something has heart, feels authentic, inspires or excites us, and makes us feel good, we want to share it with you! And while we’re often first with the hottest new restaurants and other openings, we haven’t forgotten about our long-standing favourites and hidden gems. We’ve done all the research for you. Our write-ups are accurate and informative, accompanied by sharp photography and clean design, to give you a clear idea of what’s on offer. We also provide direct booking links for many of our listings. Inside Guide does not publish negative reviews, so if we have a less-than-satisfactory experience at an establishment, we’d rather give private feedback to them directly than doing so on our public platform. Design in Focus: Mash.T’s Afro-Modernist Lighting + Furniture

Mash.T is aptly named, bringing to mind “mishmash” and conveying the process of hybrid concepts and playful experimentation. Combining traditional South African craft techniques and motifs with modern production and aesthetics, the design studio’s output feels locally rooted but with a twist. “Reworking the familiar” is how owner and founder Thabisa Mjo describes it, creating original designs with “layered interpretations”. Her aesthetic is “uniquely me, cool but not too trendy”.

The Courtyard at Nederburg Special: R150 For a Pizza + Wine

One of South Africa’s best-known estates, Nederburg has a rich wine-making heritage (since 1791) and a beautiful location overlooking the Drakenstein Mountains in Paarl. On the First Friday of every month, you can wind down into the weekend with a relaxed evening beside the fire in The Courtyard of the manor house. The cellar doors stay open until 8pm, there’s live music, and you can enjoy a glass of wine of your choice from the award-winning Winemasters range with a delicious piping-hot pizza.

SeaBreeze Fish & Shell Friday Special: Fizz & Chips for R150

Opened by Scottish restaurateurs and wine merchants, Alex and Ruth Grahame, a decade ago, SeaBreeze has always celebrated the freshest of the local (SASSI approved) catch with a menu guided by sustainability and seasonality. The heritage building at the top of Bree is relaxed but elegant, with a wide pavement terrace to watch the world go by. The menu features small plates (tacos, ceviche, samoosas, etc) and generous mains (think curries, pastas, whole roasted fish and more).

Bellagio Winter Special: R385 for 2 Courses + Glass of Wine

Thirty years after starting Bellagio in Joburg, chef-owner Louise Castle (who trained in Italy) has brought her classic Mediterranean dining to Cape Town. Bellagio is hidden away at The Foundry in Green Point, with white tablecloths, cosy stove heaters, excellent service and a seasonal menu of upmarket comfort food. This winter, the soul-warming dishes include Italian-style seafood stew, braised osso buco with Parmesan mash and a chicken, leek and tarragon pie.

The Test Kitchen Fledgelings Streetfood Fiesta: R195 for 2 Bites

The playful side of The Test Kitchen Fledglings comes out in the new winter menu of streetfood inspired bites and plates. Luke Dale Robert’s restaurant (in the original Test Kitchen premises) focuses on mentoring and developing young chefs led by chef Nathan Clarke, a setting where flavour-forward dishes and polished service go hand-in-hand with meaningful skills development. The Street Food Fiesta menu is intentionally flexible, with shareable plates from small to substantial.

Navarre Residence: A Historic Private Estate in Stellenbosch

Step across the threshold into a picture-perfect haven – a vision of rolling green lawns lined with towering trees, flower beds and walled rose gardens. There’s a sparkling dam at the edge of the garden, opening to magnificent Stellenbosch mountain views. Wilde Vy Bistro Winter Special: R595 for 3 Courses

The space has been reimagined and beautifully refurbished by Ghanaian restaurateurs Kwasi Osei-Kusi and Charles Bucknor, who partnered with chef Jürgen Snyman (ex Kloof Street House) to create a home for the generous cuisine Jürgen likes to cook. Two enclosed verandahs and a series of cosy rooms (with fireplaces) set the scene for a meal of comfort classics with a seasonal, elevated twist.
