Family, friends and members of the Glossop community came together on Saturday (July 11) to raise thousands of pounds in support of local man Jack after he was diagnosed with terminal glioblastoma. The fundraising event, held at Glossop North End Community Club before Jack begins treatment, featured a charity football match, live music, food, raffles and plenty of community spirit.

The people of Glossop and the High Peak will see the biggest change to local government in more than 50 years after the Government confirmed plans to replace Derbyshire's existing councils with two new unitary authorities. High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council will both be abolished and replaced by a new Derbyshire North Council, which will also include Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover and the northern part of Amber Valley.

Yesterday (July 15th), around 80 firefighting personnel were working at the scene. Crews continue to contain and suppress the fire while protecting nearby communities, property and the environment. Today (July 16th), firefighters are tackling hotspots in the Digsbury Intake, Featherbed Moss and Crowden areas. The main focus of operations is currently near Arnfield Moor.

Residents turned out in force on Friday, July 11, as Gamesley Community Centre celebrated the finale of its fundraising campaign to transform the village’s football sports courts. The community has now raised an impressive £44,000 towards its £50,000 target, which will unlock vital match funding from the Football Foundation and pave the way for a £220,000 refurbishment of the ageing courts.

A man arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of a teenager during an alleged burglary in Whaley Bridge has been released without further action. Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed that specialist lawyers at the Crown Prosecution Service have decided not to bring a murder charge against the homeowner, a man in his 50s. Police were called to a property in Whaley Bridge during the early hours of 1 May 2024 following reports of a burglary.

One of Glossop's favourite independent coffee shops has been chosen to run the café at Manor Park. Twig Coffee has been selected by High Peak Borough Council as the new operator of the park café. Twig Coffee, which already has branches in Glossop Train Station, Hadfield, Gamesley Community Centre and Chapel, is expected to open in the park, in a few weeks time, following a refresh of the building. Owners say the new café will be open seven days a week.

Photo credit: James Dyson Firefighters returned to Tintwistle Moor after worsening conditions overnight led Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to declare a major incident. The wildfires, which have affected land near Arnfield Farm and Tintwistle Moor, have required a huge multi agency response involving specialist wildfire teams, neighbouring fire and rescue services, the Peak District Fire Operations Group, United Utilities, local Mountain Rescue Teams and Derbyshire Constabulary.

The 4-6 year olds with their Year 7 coaches. Founded by Chika Jones and Mark Claydon in 2022, the grassroots club has become one of Glossop’s community success stories. Training children from Reception to Year 10, it has built a reputation not only for developing talented basketball players, but for ensuring every child, regardless of ability, has somewhere they can feel welcome.

Lining up on the front row just behind her Swiss competitor, the Simmondley resident made a blistering start to the main feature race, snatching the lead at the very first corner.

Stuart Boon and Xavier Andrews began their five-day 'Who Knew Walk' on Tuesday 7th July, with the first leg taking them from Glossop to Buxton. Before setting off, the pair enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Glossop Cafeteria and received a packed lunch donated by M&S Foodhall. The challenge follows the success of last year's sponsored walk from Derby to Blackpool, which raised £1,907 for charity.
