The Bloomington Volunteer Network is asking residents to complete 100,000 hours of volunteer service hours this year. The Be the Change challenge is for the current calendar year. Anyone who has been volunteering for the community since the challenge started has been contributing toward the goal. Volunteer opportunities include food pantries and kitchens, homeless shelters and animal shelters. Environmental sustainability programs and arts and theater companies also offer opportunities.
Indiana consortium wins funds to build medical research hub
A group of Indiana research and business organizations led by Indiana University faculty is receiving funds from the National Science Foundation to build a musculoskeletal health research hub. The Indiana Musculoskeletal Health Partnership for the Advancement of Care & Treatment (IMPACT) is one of ten regional teams to win an NSF Regional Innovation Engine award.
My Sister’s Closet opening two stores in College Mall
With its lease on College Avenue ending, My Sister’s Closet is opening two stores at College Mall. The College Avenue location will remain open until the lease is up at the end of August. My Sister’s Closet is a nonprofit organization which provides secondhand women’s clothing and free services to help prepare low-income women in vulnerable situations for the workforce.

Parasite causing ‘explosive diarrhea’ on the rise in Indiana
Indiana has had over 100 confirmed cases of cyclospora, a bacteria known to cause “explosive diarrhea,” since May 1. Dr. Bill Sullivan, Showalter Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the IU School of Medicine, said the updated figures are alarming. “We’re approaching 5,000 cases across 31 states; nearly 100 people have been hospitalized so far,” Sullivan said.
Local film company says more than 5,000 extras have signed up for ‘Little Five’
A Bloomington film company said more than 5,000 people have signed up to be extras for “Little Five,” a film inspired by the creation of IU’s women's Little 500. Gordon Strain, co-owner of Pigasus Pictures, said the effort to recruit thousands of Bloomington residents is about more than filling stands at the stadium. "We want to give that experience to real people so that they have that story to share with their kids one day or their grandkids," Strain said.
Activist group blasts energy project related to Monrovia data center
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved a 130-megawatt battery energy storage facility in Pike County last week. The Crosstrack Energy Storage project is part of the energy infrastructure planned to support Google's data center in Monrovia, according to IURC filings. Citizens Action Coalition Program Director Ben Inskeep said it is one of three projects identified by AES Indiana to help meet the data center’s electricity demands.
Joe Smith, local sportscaster for decades, dies at 78
Joe Smith, a local sportscaster for over 40 years and member of the Indiana Sportswriters/Sportscasters Hall of Fame, died Monday. He was 78. Smith’s radio station, WGCL, confirmed his passing. “Joe Smith has passed on,” said Kent Sterling, the station’s program director.
Trump hosts top IndyCar racers to promote D.C. streetrace
President Donald Trump enlisted star IndyCar racers, a simulated pit stop and a pair of high-powered sports cars Monday as he sought to rev up excitement for a race around the nation’s capital next month. Racers Álex Palou, Felix Rosenqvist and David Malukas and motorsports officials stood beside the president as he promoted the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a two-day event next month.
‘I don’t know how we approve this’: pharmacy board narrowly accepts drug diversion settlement
Indiana’s pharmacy regulators on Monday reluctantly approved a disciplinary settlement with IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital over what they describe as one of the largest known drug theft cases in state history. Multiple board members questioned whether the punishment fit the magnitude of the misconduct, however.
