By Frank Greally I was on the last few days of my 12 day Walk on Gratitude Road- Dublin to Ballyhaunis- when I heard the news of the sad passing of Olympian Gerry O’Reilly- a native of Dunboyne- at age 61. Less than 12 months ago, Gerry, who had lived and worked in America since graduating from Villanova University, was back at Dunboyne Athletic Club for the unveiling of a plaque in his honour.

Ireland’s sprint star Rhasidat Adeleke is set to make her highly anticipated return to the 400 metres when she takes to the track at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on July 3. One of the world’s premier athletics meetings, the Diamond League event marks Rhasidat’s first competitive outing over one lap in almost a year and signals the start of an exciting new chapter in her 2026 campaign. The Irish record-holder returns to Hayward Field with unfinished business.

Sharlene Mawdsley delivered another standout performance on the global stage, recording her fourth personal best of the season at her Diamond League debut in Paris. The 27-year-old powered to fifth place in a high-quality 400m field, clocking an impressive 50.06 — continuing her remarkable upward trajectory. At the front, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic dominated proceedings, setting a new Diamond League record of 48.48 with a commanding display.

One of Ireland’s most accomplished sprinters, Phil Healy, has announced her retirement from international athletics, bringing the curtain down on an outstanding 14-year career representing her country. The 31-year-old Cork native leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having excelled across the 100m, 200m and 400m disciplines while collecting 17 national senior titles and cementing her place among Ireland’s greatest-ever sprinters.
