Islands Weekly
VerifiedNewspaper
The Islands’ Weekly was founded in 1982 as a free-distribution shopper on Lopez Island in the San Juans. After purchase by Sound Publishing in 2001, it was changed to a community newspaper format. Today, the newspaper serves a Lopez community known as “the friendly isle,” and don’t be surprised when passing motorists wave – it’s a longstanding tradition. The island is also known for its gently rolling hills, bucolic farmlands, plenty of beaches to dig your toes into and an abundance of vistas to marvel. The spectacular beaches and views are a must in every visitor’s itinerary. It only takes a 45-minute ferry ride from Anacortes to get to Lopez Island, then it’s just a four-mile drive to the village, the hub of the island. Source

By Linda Ann Vorobik Isn’t it amazing how there are so many talented and creative folks on these islands? I had a potluck the other evening, and I swear we could start our own utopia with the skills and talents of those attending. This same abundance of human talent is also displayed at my partner Randy O’Bryant’s community smelt fishing events on Mud Bay.

The Weekly caught up with Laurie Bullock (well, digitally caught up — she answered these on a plane!) to find out more about Taproot Community Kitchen, which recently opened its doors. Read below for a shortened version of her answers, and online for the full version. Q: Reading the history on the Taproot website brings the length of this project into focus! Do you think the decades of work have made this year’s opening feel extra special?

Idea for article | Letter - Islands' Weekly
I have been a subscriber to paper newspapers all my long life—and the various incantations of The Islands’ Weekly since 2001. Over the last year or two The Islands’ Weekly has become a regurgitation of The Islands’ Sounder; I was ready to not renew my subscription. Then, I noticed the changes. Better content, more focus on Lopez Island’s events and groups. The 16th September 2026 was one of the best yet.
Local author releases new memoir - Islands' Weekly
Submitted by Jan Crossen. RIDDLE: What grunts, snores, wheezes, sneezes, barks and squeals, and is the term used for a group of three or more pugs? ANSWER: A grumble of course! A grumble is the name given to a group of three or more pugs. The term “grumble” is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek expression referring to the little sounds associated with this particular breed of canine adorableness.

Washington and a multistate coalition have won a permanent court order stopping the federal administration’s unlawful attempt to gut essential health, education and social service programs for low-income families. “The court strongly rebuked the administration’s unlawful deprivation of basic healthcare, education, and other social services,” Attorney General Nick Brown said.

Leadership for our future: Katherine Bryant Ingman for County Council | Letter - Islands' Weekly
Katherine represents the future leaders that I want to see locally and nationally. Energetic young people dreaming of a better future who are ready to listen and eager to work. I met Katherine years ago when she led the wonderfully successful gleaning program through the newly founded Food Share at the Lopez Island Family Resource Center. Since then, I’ve observed her in other volunteer and work roles.
