Vendor day to feature live-fire demos at Hillsdale shooting center
HILLSDALE, MI – Liberty & Company Outfitters will host a vendor day Saturday, July 18, at the John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center on the Hillsdale College campus. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature live-fire demonstrations, industry vendors and giveaways. The Halter Center is located at 4390 Bankers Road, approximately five miles from the main Hillsdale College campus.
Jackson to vote on ordinance banning unpermitted encampments
JACKSON, MI – An ordinance amendment banning unpermitted encampments in the City of Jackson will be voted on at the next city council meeting. A proposed amendment to the city’s Code of Ordinances addressing unattended or excessive personal property in public spaces will be discussed and decided on at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, in the City Council Chambers at Jackson City Hall, second floor, 161 W. Surveillance video shows ‘cold-blooded’ killing outside Jackson party store, prosecutor says
JACKSON, MI – High-definition surveillance video played in court Wednesday morning recorded the final moments of Michael Mishaw’s life as he was gunned down outside of a Jackson party store and left to die in the snow. Robert Duane Poole was bound over to circuit court Wednesday, July 15, following his preliminary examination in the murder of Michael Mishaw, who was found fatally shot in January.
Four boaters rescued after vessel capsizes on Center Lake channel
LEONI TWP., MI – Four people were rescued from the water after their boat capsized in the channel connecting Center Lake and Round Lake on Wednesday, July 15. The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to the area of Fifth St. and North Lakeside Drive at approximately 9 a.m. after receiving reports that three people were in the water and unable to swim. One person was able to reach shore and called 911 from a nearby business.
Hillsdale College offers free online course exploring Homer’s epic tale
HILLSDALE, MI – Hillsdale College has made a new online course available to the public that examines one of Western literature’s foundational works. The Michigan-based liberal arts college released “The Odyssey” course on July 13-14, taught by Benedict Whalen, an associate professor of English. The free offering delves into Homer’s ancient epic poem that follows the hero Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War.

RIVES TWP., MI – A township in northern Jackson County with a sordid history of officials resigning will be in need of another new treasurer soon. The Rives Township Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of township Treasurer Carol Schulz Tuesday evening, July 14, during its board meeting, according to an audio recording of the meeting.
Manchester Chicken Broil returning for 73rd year, set to serve 8,000 dinners
MANCHESTER, MI - The Manchester Chicken Broil is returning for its 73rd year. The event will be held at Alumni Memorial Field in Manchester from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18. It takes months of planning for 400 volunteers to get ready to serve the expected 8,000 meals, said Broil president Jeff Mann. “For a lot of the people, this is the only time they see each other is at the chicken broil,” Mann said.
Napoleon residents protest dock removal enforcement at packed meeting
NAPOLEON TWP., MI – A public meeting held to explain why Napoleon Township is cracking down on private docks that have been in place on public land for generations left dock owners frustrated. About 100 concerned residents and lakeside property owners packed into the township hall Monday evening, July 13, for an informational meeting about enforcing the removal of private docks on public land in the Oak Point neighborhood on the southwest side of Big Wolf Lake.
Hillsdale biology student earns top national research honor
HILLSDALE, MI – A Hillsdale College student earned first place at a national biology convention for his research examining how surface roughness affects bacterial growth on medical implants. Connor Pratt ’26 won the Frank G. Brooks Award for Excellence in Student Research at the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society’s biennial national convention at Florida State University in late May. The award recognizes the best oral presentations at the convention.
