This talk by Rachel Gevlin will consider Austen’s most famous rakish figures—John Willoughby, Henry Crawford, and George Wickham—and explore each novel’s narrative handling of these men’s sexual transgressions.

We can surmise from an 1813 letter to her brother Francis that Jane Austen was bemused to find that their brother Henry had “heard P. & P. warmly praised in Scotland” (25 September). To her sister, Cassandra, she wrote: Lady Robert [Kerr] is delighted with P. & P—and reallywasso as I understand before she knew who wrote it—for, of course, she knows now.—[Henry] told her with as much satisfaction as if it were my wish.

Sep 26 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Emiko—A Japanese Canadian Reimagining of Emma Join the Victoria Region as we host Chieri Uegaki, author of Emiko, who will discuss her YA reimagining of Jane Austen's Emma, set on the west coast of Canada. Local bookstore Munro's will have a couple of booksellers at the event selling the novel, and Uegaki will be signing copies after her talk. Admission is $10, cash only. The Garden World of Jane Austen Join the Massachusetts Region for "The Garden World of Jane Austen" with Jana Milbocker. Austen loved gardens. She had a keen interest in flowers and kitchen gardening and described gardens in her novels and letters. Learn about the flowers and gardens of Jane Austen’s world—from her personal cottage garden to the grand estates that she visited and wove into her novels.

Genteel Arts and Manners of the Regency Era Join the California Southwest Region for a half-day meeting as we learn about the Genteel Arts and Manners of the Regency Era. We will be painting a watercolor using only colors that would have been available in Austen's time, led by Linda Lawson. Claire Bellanti will present Cassandra Austen's watercolor portraits. Historical lace group The Hedgehog Lacers will give a presentation with a brief history of lace and how it is made.

We'll be playing the game Endearment, a strategy board game in which you take on the role of one of Jane Austen's beloved heroines as you traverse Regency England, add to your accomplishments, and engage in social rivalries in pursuit of a timeless romance. Please also bring any Austen-related games you may have. To make the day even more fun, please bring a sweet/savory to share. If you do bring a savory, please make it a vegetarian one.
