Bill Frisell is one of those unique artists whose playing might be said to yield universal meaning since jazz, rock, country, blues, American folk and Americana aficionados are all able to relate to aspects of his style. Context is all, of course, but even then his playing is not limited by it. At age 75, as of March 2026, he has created a sextet for In My Dreams, comprising long-time playing associates who have populated many of his albums since the 1980s.

She appears to transfer effortlessly between languages: there are songs in Spanish (her native language), Portuguese (bossa from Brazil), French (Brassens’ 'Je Me Suis Fait Tout Petit') and an eclectic selection of songs in English – Amy Winehouse’s ‘You Sent Me Flying’ for example, and ‘Freight Train’, Elizabeth Cotten’s 1906 American folk song.

There’s a mesmeric quality to her voice, and to these drum-and-bass inspired arrangements, that hold an audience’s attention in any venue or, perhaps, in the relaxing space of one’s living room on a Sunday afternoon. There’s more than relaxation to this EP however.

A beautifully crafted album. The late Ralph Towner was unquestionably a virtuoso guitarist on both classical and 12-string, as he effortlessly demonstrates here. He is a lyrical player, as he shows on ‘St. Helens’ with the ability to focus on melodic development, yet frame his line with dazzling asides. Peacock is exceptionally well recorded, with the taste to avoid meeting virtuosity with virtuosity, yet each note counts, perfectly framing Towner’s flights of invention.

Although this “complete” set was first released in the mid-1990s, on Mosaic and on Columbia/Legacy, its reappearance as a part of the Miles Davis Centennial is as welcome as it is important. The packaging is less substantial to the 1995 eight CD box set, and comes with new liner notes, but ultimately it is the music, seven full sets recorded live at the Plugged Nickel on 22 and 23 December 1965, that is of overriding significance.
