Four Track Substack

Hope this finds you all relatively well. It was a rough week or so this way. I will not go into too much detail right here, but as some of you may know, Bruce Tull, our friend for nearly 40 years and guitarist/ founding member of the Scud Mountain Boys left this world last week. He was a person of rare kindness and smarts. He was a singular guitarist with a style all his own. I shared some of the most meaningful experiences of my life with him. We had a shit ton of fun making music together.

Friends, I hope this finds you all relatively well. As you can see by the title, I’ve included a demo for my song Is It Serious. For the uninitiated, the studio recording the song is on my new LP Sunny, I Was Wrong. This song is a bit different than those I usually write. That happens every once in a while. A tune strolls in from left field. My phone recordings tell me that I had started sketching this one out about five years ago, but quickly dropped the ball and forgot it existed.

Friends, Sorry for the absence. I was on tour in USA for a couple weeks, and then came back to Canada & started preparing for our June 6 full band show in Toronto. Had been a while since I played a gig with a full band, but I had not forgotten how much energy I expend getting it all together. Lucky for me (and for whomever got to see the band gig), I played with some musicians who—to a person—make me look like the cowboy-chord songwriter I am.

Friends, On Sunday morning I will publish the music video for the song Force Feed The Fire from my album Sunny, I Was Wrong. In the Fall I took a multi day bikepacking trip on Vancouver Island, BC. I was accompanied by my good friend the renowned adventure cyclist and aspiring filmmaker Theo Kelsey-Verdecchia. (Check out his Instagram account for some of the truly mad self-supported cycling routes and races he’s completed. It’s kind of nuts.

Friends, Hope this finds you all relatively well. As most of you already know, my album Sunny, I Was Wrong came out on April 3 through New West Records. As it is with all of my records, it’s a relief to have the songs on the outside instead of the inside. I’m especially proud of this record, so it’s an even bigger relief to have it out in the world. I haven’t read my own press in a long, long time, but I’m told the record is being pretty well received.

Friends, Hope you’re all relatively well. The Sunny, I Was Wrong LP is out today! Feels like it’s been a long time coming. Had to jump a few hurdles and thread a few needles to make it happen. (Just about every hurdle and needle had to do with money, sadly, but we got there.) A slight understatement to say I’m relieved to have this record on the outside of me. I sincerely hope you all enjoy it. I do think it’s my favorite and my best…so far. But what do I know. I liked Ishtar.
