The John Schofield Trust is working hard to improve social mobility in UK broadcast newsrooms through its mentoring schemes for early career and apprentice journalists and its e-mentoring scheme for Year 12 and 13 students considering a career in journalism.
The under-representation of those from disadvantaged backgrounds is a particular problem within journalism. The Trust believes this urgently needs to change so that the news stories that are told truly reflect our society. We support young people who may never have considered journalism as a career, enabling them to champion their diverse stories and life experiences. Source

Hebe Campbell, presenter and video journalist at The Independent, has won the Breakthrough Award at the MHP 30 To Watch Awards, celebrating young journalistic talent. The John Schofield Trust supported the MHP Awards this year, specifically for this category which encourages non university graduates to nominate themselves for outstanding work at early career level. As part of this, Hebe will be offered mentorship free of charge from a Senior Fellow at the Trust.

Cat Andersson has joined the John Schofield Trust in the new role of Operations Manager, focused on managing our mentoring programmes. With a background spanning education, training, accessibility in the arts and service management, Cat was most recently co-ordinating frontline refugee services in Liverpool at a grassroots community charity.

Founder Susannah Schofield awarded honorary degree - The John Schofield Trust
Our founder Susannah Schofield MBE was made an honorary Doctor of Literature at the University of London’s Foundation Day ceremony yesterday, in recognition of her work on diversity within the journalism sector. John Schofield Trust Chair Jonathan Paterson welcomed the news saying, “Since founding the John Schofield Trust 30 years ago, Susie has worked tirelessly to ensure young journalists are supported in their careers.
