Editorial Note: In this series, Jon turns to a subject that runs through much of his investigative work: the anatomy of a secret operation. He begins with the intelligence operation itself, looking at how large-scale deception can be organized and sustained. From there, Jon applies that framework much more broadly, asking what happens when the methods of a secret operation extend into institutions, accepted narratives, and systems that most people regard as ordinary features of society.

Editorial Note: When a juicy mainstream article on a supposed “medical breakthrough” would cross our paths, whoever had encountered the article first—Jon or I, what would then get uttered to the other in an email would be, “Keep this article in your back pocket,” along with the link to the article. Such an article crossed my path this morning. And it made me recall what Jon wrote in May 2021 about the “RNA gold rush”—as in the money profits to be derived from this “technology”.

Editorial Note This is the fourth of thirteen unpublished audio recordings Jon made during the Hurricane Helene outage. Still largely cut off from outside information, Jon begins with rumors circulating around Asheville and the difficulty of knowing what is true. From there, his attention returns to the approaching 2024 presidential election. But the election soon becomes a doorway into something broader.

Editorial Note Yesterday, I published a May 1987 Hour 25 radio appearance in which Jon discussed with Harlan Ellison an investigation he had recently completed for LA Weekly into the Christian religious right and its fascination with Armageddon. At the time I published that recording, I had not yet located the original article. I have now found it, thanks to a tip from reader Bassehound.

Editorial Note Toward the end of what Jon would later describe as the first phase of his career as an investigative journalist—roughly 1982 to 1987, a period that included his LA Weekly years—he wrote an investigative story about what he called “the Christian End Times groups in the US who were rooting for Armageddon.” The article was published in LA Weekly in early 1987. I have not yet located the exact title or a copy of the original article.
