By Darren Johnson Journal & Press My journalism beats aren’t really Saratoga Springs or horse racing, but I figured I’d stop by the track stables yesterday with my wife to see Saturday’s Belmont winner Golden Tempo and local owner Cherie DeVaux. No real story to tell that you can’t get from myriad other outlets, but I congratulated DeVaux and the horse, too, for the win. Studying Golden Tempo, he does seem more self-aware than most horses I’ve met in my life. A bit mischievous, very confident.

Catching up with a recent poll, it seems our readers are mostly old enough to remember 1976 and the patriotism back then for the Bicentennial, despite 1976 having hard economic times and being not well after Watergate and the Vietnam War … as compared to now, where it seems our institutions can’t get it together as well for the nation’s 250th.

By Darren Johnson Journal & Press Some newspaper stuff… Substack keeps putting us on their bestseller list in the category of Rising News. Thank you all for that. I think these lists are based on our paid/free ratio, and I tend to cut “free” people who aren’t engaging with the blog, so — if the goal is street cred — I guess we have a winning formula, of sorts. Perhaps it’s the same as how Elise Stefanik made the New York Times Bestseller List recently (congrats on that — I’m jealous).

We’re going to go light today with the newsletter as we’re working on a print edition (that should hit Friday). If you’d like a print edition or would like to renew your print edition (you can do so at any time — helps us pay the printer!), you can do so here. We have lots of options to pick from.
