It’s time for some ruminations, so pull up a chair, pour yourself a cuppa, and let’s chat. It’s been a nice week here. The weather has been warm but not oppressive; the hummingbirds are fewer; I added some thistles to the feeder to accommodate those ravenous chickadees; and it is finally, finally going to rain.

Welcome, at last, FALL. Blessed Mabon to us all. I hope your evenday was a good one, full of reflection and spicy candles to welcome the season to come. I’m all in on this, by the way. I’m sipping some amazing cinnamon tea gifted by my friend Liv Constantine; the pumpkins are on the counter, mantel, and table; my favorite little witch painting is up in my office; my fall candles are out; the wreath is on the door; and thank all that’s holy, the heat wave has finally broken.

You are forever in my thoughts. Today is a good day to talk about beginnings and remind you that life is short. When you are not wearing the skin you are supposed to wear, life can be very contentious. It will show up in myriad ways, from a vague sense of dislocation to genuine dissatisfaction to depression and beyond.

Can you imagine? It’s a rather hysterical image, but fitting. So much has happened this week, bam, bam, bam, and I wish I could just sit back and enjoy any or all of it, but all I’m really thinking about is how to land the plane on the new book. I need to work on the schedule, don’t I?

This is my 34th novel, which in and of itself is utterly remarkable to me. It’s been a busy twenty years, making up lost time for those years after college when I wasn’t writing. And this story comes from a wellspring of deep emotion from a time in my life that was rather difficult.

I have a newsletter to finish that I need to get out on Sunday, I had a TV appearance this morning, I have gotten more than halfway through my revision of my 2027 book that’s due September 1, and I needed to write this piece. I ran out of time this morning, so I plan to do it as soon as I finished at my doctor’s appointment. Yeah, best laid plans.
