Updated September 17, 2026 at 7:50 AM PDT PARIS — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney used a speech to the European Parliament on Thursday to make a pointed case for closer ties between Canada and Europe, just hours after President Trump warned Europe against moving ahead with a proposed new partnership with Ottawa. "Canada and Europe are each strong. Europe and Canada are stronger together," Carney told the European Union's lawmakers in Strasbourg, France.

The House of Representatives held billionaire investor Leon Black in contempt of Congress on Wednesday. The bipartisan move came after Black refused to provide additional information on his relationship with convicted sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. It's the first time the House has held a witness in the Epstein investigation in contempt. Black defied two congressional subpoenas issued by the House Oversight Committee, which is looking into his relationship with Epstein.

Medicaid, the largest public health safety net in the United States, is facing a nearly $1 trillion cut over the next decade.
