Geneva to spray after West Nile found in mosquitoes
Geneva’s contractor Clarke Mosquito Control will spray a mosquito control application from dusk Tuesday, July 21, to dawn on Wednesday, July 22, officials said in a news release. Area mosquito surveillance traps recently tested positive for the West Nile virus, so Geneva is joining with neighboring municipalities to do spraying. West Nile virus can cause symptoms like a fever, and in some cases, serious problems like swelling in the brain or around the brain and spinal cord.
Batavia Woman’s Club sets fundraiser shopping event
The Batavia Woman’s Club and Oui Travel are offering the Fifth Annual Passport to Batavia shopping event from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25 in the city’s downtown. According to a news release, the event raised $2,000 last year for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet to assist local families in need. The club wants to surpass that amount with this year’s event. Passports are $30 and available at the Batavia Farmers Market, 110 N. River St., 8 a.m. to noon July 25.
2 men shot in Aurora, including a 19-year-old in ‘serious but stable’ condition
Two people are in serious but stable condition after being shot Thursday inside a home in Aurora. A 19-year-old man and a 53-year-old man were taken to the hospital for treatment. The Aurora Police Department is investigating the shooting on the city’s east side. The police responded about 10:18 p.m. to the 1900 block of Westridge Place. Upon arrival, officers found the two men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a news release.
Hindu community sues for right to build temple, townhouses in Elgin, aims to undo 59-year-old decree
A Hindu community has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Elgin, asking a judge to undo a 1967 consent decree in Cook County. The Umiya Mataji Sanstha Chicago Midwest already owns the 34-acre parcel at 890 Galt Blvd, which is adjacent to Lake Street-U.S. Highway 20 on Elgin’s far east side and on which the Hindu community wants to build a temple, community center and townhouses.
Aurora man found guilty of first-degree murder, was 16 at time of 2023 shooting
An Aurora 19-year-old was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of another 19-year-old Aurora man during a what authorities said was a drug deal gone wrong. Zahmeir Andrews was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to a Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office release. Andrews waived his right to a jury trial Kane County Judge David Kliment decided the verdict.

Hazmat situation in Campton Hills: Concentrated hydrogen peroxide release prompts emergency response
Fire crews helped contain a concentrated hydrogen peroxide release Thursday to a residence in Campton Hills. Authorities said there is no danger to the public or the surrounding properties. No injuries are reported. The Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District responded around 10:20 a.m. to the area of Hastings Drive and Canterbury Court. Crews were responding to a reported gas leak in the area. Upon arrival, crews detected a release of concentrated hydrogen peroxide.
Data center eyed for South Elgin, land owned by ex-County Board member: ‘Expecting people to be mad at me’
A Dallas developer is proposing a data center in Elgin Township with a claim that the project would generate $1 million per year in property taxes and hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in tax revenue for South Elgin. Former Kane County Board member Mike Kenyon is the owner of the 20 acres on which the data center is proposed.
