Takeaways from Todd Blanche's confirmation hearing for attorney general
Todd Blanche, President Trump's pick for attorney general, faced tough questioning — from Democrats and some Republicans — over issues that have dogged the Justice Department for the past 18 months. Blanche, currently the acting attorney general, had won Senate confirmation early in Trump's second term to serve as deputy attorney general. But after facing hours in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, Blanche's confirmation to the top job is not assured.
China and Xi favored over U.S. and Trump in many nations: Survey
WASHINGTON — The world has largely viewed the U.S. more favorably than China for years, but those opinions have flipped in Beijing's favor this year, according to a new poll by the Pew Research Center, a remarkable shift driven in part by tensions between the Trump administration and U.S. allies. More people have favorable views of China than the U.S. in 25 out of the 36 countries and territories that were surveyed, including Canada and Mexico.
Hong Kong booksellers arrested for allegedly selling seditious books
HONG KONG — Hong Kong authorities have raided two bookstores and arrested five people on suspicion of selling allegedly seditious publications, local media reported Wednesday, in the latest step targeting independent booksellers. A bookseller was seen being taken away.
Cancer disparities researchers say federal funding changes have disrupted their work
Why are some people more likely to get cancer, and to die from it than others? Rural Americans, for instance, are 18% more likely to die from cancer overall, and Black women are 35% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. That's according to a recent report from the American Association for Cancer Research, or AACR. Cancer disparity researchers study these gaps and how to close them. Their work has contributed to reductions in many disparities.
China's economy grows 4.3% in Q2, slowest since late 2022
HONG KONG — China's economy slowed sharply to a 4.3% annualized pace of growth in the April-June quarter, the government said Wednesday, the weakest in over three years. The official data fell short of forecasts and was far below the economy's strong 5% pace of growth in January-March, despite a surge in exports driven partly by the boom in artificial intelligence, and by robust global demand for Chinese electric vehicles.
Mystery bidder buys T. rex nicknamed 'Gus' for a record $50 million
NEW YORK — A Tyrannosaurus rex fossil billed as one of the world's largest and most complete specimens was sold for a record $50.1 million Tuesday to a mystery bidder. Sotheby's said the 67-million-year-old fossil, nicknamed "Gus," is now the most expensive set of dinosaur bones ever auctioned off, besting the almost $45 million price tag for a nearly complete stegosaurus sold by the same New York auction house in 2024.
Trump will speak on elections in Thursday primetime address
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will deliver a primetime address this week that he says will include a focus on elections, suggesting he could revisit long-debunked conspiracy theories about his 2020 defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. The speech comes as he's escalated calls for Republicans to pass tighter federal voting rules for November's midterm elections.
Ebola is spreading faster in eastern Congo than it can be tracked, as deaths pass 700
Eighty percent of new Ebola cases in eastern Congo are emerging from unknown chains of transmission, the World Health Organization said Tuesday, a sign the outbreak is spreading faster than health officials can track despite an expanding response. Congo has been battling an outbreak of a rare type of Ebola since May, with no approved treatment or vaccine. The Africa Centres for Disease Control says it is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on the continent.
Spain sparkles to shock France 2-0 and advance to the World Cup final
Spain is going back to the World Cup final, after defeating France 2-0 in a dominant semifinal performance. It was a tough end for France, which had entered this tournament as a favorite, after winning the 2018 World Cup and losing to Argentina in the 2022 final. But France had no match for Spain, which has only allowed one goal this World Cup — and has not been beaten in two years (a 37-game streak: 28W - 9D - 0L).
