BANDUNG, Indonesia, Aug 31 (Reuters) – The United States and Indonesia launched their annual joint military exercises on Monday, the first since announcing a new defence partnership this year, with drills from tactical airborne jumps and missile firing to jungle training and cyber defence. “Super Garuda Shield”, held annually since 2006, will run until September 11 and include more than 4,700 personnel, with 13 other countries taking part including Japan, South Korea, Australia and Canada.

AMSTERDAM, Aug 31 (Reuters) – India must limit work on an hydroelectric plant in the Kashmir region and uphold a water-sharing treaty with Pakistan it suspended over tensions with its neighbouring country, the Permanent Court of Arbitration said on Monday. The Hague-based court said the Indus Water Treaty between the two countries remained fully in force, as India had no justification for ending or suspending the agreement.
Indonesia inspects 19 companies linked to wildfires, official says

In the middle of a severe dry season, the Southeast Asian nation has been battling wildfires for weeks, with the smoke raising the risk of respiratory illnesses not only for humans, but also for the country’s orangutan population.
Fire at Smithfield Foods Over the Weekend
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) – Multiple crews were needed to douse a blaze at the Smithfield Foods plant over the weekend. There was heavy smoke on several floors of the facility when crews arrived at about 5 yesterday morning. The fire was extinguished in about 45 minutes. There were no injuries and the cause is under investigation.

Israel signs $3.5 billion air defence deal with Greece

Israel’s defence ministry said it was Israel’s largest-ever defence export deal with Greece and one of the biggest in the country’s history. The agreement confirmed an earlier Reuters report.
Swiss police arrest suspect after deadly rave shooting
Aug 31 (Reuters) – Swiss police said on Monday that they arrested a 43-year-old suspect in relation to a deadly shooting incident at a rave in the town of Aarau on the weekend. “Investigations into the exact circumstances of the incident, as well as its background and possible motive, are currently underway. At this stage, it is assumed that a single perpetrator was involved,” police in the canton of Aargau said in a statement.
GameStop expects lower quarterly sales on store closures, France exit
Aug 31 (Reuters) – GameStop said on Monday it expects second-quarter net sales to decline due to planned store closures and the sale of its France operations. The videogame retailer expects quarterly net sales in the range of $780 million to $800 million on a preliminary basis, compared with $972.2 million reported a year ago.
A Candlelight Vigil Will Take Place Tonight

Non-profit Emily’s Hope is laying out 54 empty shoes to represent those who lost their lives to overdose in Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties since the beginning of last year. It begins at 8 p.m. at the River Greenway Amphitheater in Sioux Falls. The Arc of Dreams will be lit purple, the international color of overdose awareness.
Eli Lilly to buy Merida Biosciences in deal worth up to $2.88 billion
Aug 31 (Reuters) – Eli Lilly said on Monday it would acquire privately held Merida Biosciences for up to $2.88 billion in cash, as it seeks to expand its pipeline of potential treatments for immunity-related and allergic diseases. Lilly has been on an acquisition spree, boosted by the booming demand for its obesity drugs. Its deal spending in 2026 has outpaced that in the prior years.
