KFAI is a volunteer-based community radio station that exists to broadcast information, arts and entertainment programming for an audience of diverse racial, social and economic backgrounds. By providing a voice for people ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media, KFAI increases understanding between peoples and communities, while fostering the values of democracy and social justice.
KFAI is a non-commercial FM radio station operating on 90.3 MHz in Minneapolis and 106.7 MHz in St Paul. KFAI is governed by a volunteer community Board of Directors, managed by a small paid full-time and part-time staff, and operated by a volunteer staff of over 300. KFAI's budget for 2017 was approximately $850,000.
KFAI is listener-supported, with over 2,700 members contributing nearly twenty-five percent of its income. Additional support has come from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Minnesota, the McKnight Foundation, the Bush Foundation, the Otto Bremer Foundation, area corporations and program underwriters.
KFAI has been broadcasting since 1978 with major signal expansions in 1982, 1994 and in 2008 bringing it to its current level of 900 watts.
KFAI celebrated its 40th year of broadcasting in 2018.

What is Disco Never Died Day? Disco Never Died refers to the cultural rallying cry following the infamous Disco Demolition Night on July 12, 1979. On this date, Chicago radio shock-jock Steve Dahl held an anti-disco promotional event at Comiskey Park, culminating in a pile of disco records being blown up on the field. The backlash was heavily fueled by homophobia and racism, directly targeting the Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ communities; pioneers of the genre.
