He's now getting a wardrobe refresh. This year, Big Tex will be outfitted in a new look from Cavender's Boot City while wearing a new 95-gallon hat from Resistol.

A man in Midland has yet to be found after opening fire on a police officer following a failed traffic stop. The man eventually escaped after exiting his vehicle and fleeing on foot. The Midland Police Department is asking the public for any information that could lead to his discovery and arrest: On Wednesday, June 10, a Midland Police officer initiated a routine traffic stop on a vehicle, the driver later identified as Victor Mata Villarreal.

In honor of his legacy, KFYO, Townsquare Media, and Chad Hasty’s family have partnered with the Free Market Institute (FMI) at Texas Tech University to establish the Chad Hasty Memorial Scholarship Fund. News/Talk 95.1 & 970 KFYO and Townsquare Media are deeply saddened to share the news that longtime host, beloved personality, and Lubbock institution Chad Hasty passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday morning. He was 43 years old. Chad joined Lubbock radio in 2003 and soon became the voice of KFYO's morning show. In 2021, The Chad Hasty Show moved to late afternoons, where he continued informing and entertaining audiences across the region.

A young man in Lubbock was recently charged for his involvement in the sexual assault of a female victim. The woman was too drunk to speak clearly, and was filmed being assaulted by the man and another accomplice on her own cell phone. 19-year-old Joshua Caleb Lewis was charged on Friday, April 24, with sexual assault following an incident in March involving a female victim.

Texas Tech University has gotten some love from the U.S. Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in the form of a $1.75 million grant. Why? Because researchers in the college of engineering are working on a massive project aimed at preventing accidents and keeping the roads safer for drivers and pedestrians. Researchers Hongchao Liu and Changzhi Li  from the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering expressed the need for creating safer traffic conditions across the state.

A fugitive from Texas wanted for aggravated sexual assault has been arrested thanks to an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip. As a result, the tipster will receive the cash reward of up to $5,000. According to a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) press release, a multi-agency effort responded to a Crime Stoppers tip revealing information on 47-year-old Herbert Lee Souvenir. Souvenir was located and arrested on April 17, 2026, at a residence in southern San Antonio.

A Lubbock teenager was run over by a pickup truck and pronounced dead after allegedly hanging off of the side. According to a recent press release from the Lubbock Police Department (LPD), officers were called to the 5100 block of Avenue W at 3:51 p.m. on Saturday after reports were made of a car accident with injuries. The Seventh Court of Appeals has just ruled in favor of Gary Boren, requiring the City of Lubbock to put his name on the special election ballot for City Council District 4. Gary Boren has been fighting for his name to appear on the ballot for Lubbock City Council District 4, but since he only lived in the district for two months when he filed, the city rejected him. State law requires candidates who apply for city council to have lived in the district for at least six months.

Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey didn't have to wait long to hear his name called in the 2026 NFL Draft in round one on Thursday night. Bailey's name was expected to be called anywhere from #2 overall to #10. That's how good he is. Everyone knew that QB Fernando Mendoza would be the first pick to the Las Vegas Raiders. And the the New York Jets were next on the clock at number two, and they chose David Bailey of Texas Tech. Bailey was the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the year.
