Chilkoot Lake, near Haines, is a popular destination for fishing, sightseeing, camping and brown bear viewing. Particularly during the Sockeye run, it’s hard not to stumble upon a bear – or multiple. Still, the 32-site campground within the state recreation area only has one bear-resistant food storage container. As Avery Ellfeldt reports for the Alaska Desk, that’s about to change. Also in the news, a Sitka vet is asking folks to leash their dogs when exploring some local beaches.
Chilkoot Lake campground will soon have 3 bear-resistant food lockers
Chilkoot Lake, near Haines, is a popular destination for fishing, camping and brown bear viewing. But the state recreation area’s 32-site campground has just one food storage container, which has raised concerns about bear-human interactions. That’s about to change. Later this month, the campground will get two more bear-resistant food lockers thanks to a donation from Defenders of Wildlife, a national nonprofit.

Four communities across Alaska could soon receive nearly seven million dollars in federal funding for hazard mitigation projects. Among them is the Chilkat Indian Village, near Haines. As Avery Ellfeldt reports for the Alaska Desk, the tribe would put the money toward mitigating local landslide risk. And, a lack of food resources in Alaska this summer means that bear conflicts might be more likely. And a new study suggests that having a dog could more than double that chance.
Klukwan could get $1.2 million from FEMA for landslide project

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced late last month that it has set aside disaster-related funding for Juneau, the Bering Sea community of St. Paul, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the Chilkat Indian Village, near Haines.

$6.5 million bond added to Skagway ballot
Skagway voters will decide in October if they want to approve a $6.5 million bond to install infrastructure like water and sewer at what is currently Garden City RV Park.
