Georgia Power will invest $100,000 in Camp Tanglewood through the Trails to Tomorrow Capital Campaign. This money supports facility improvements and program expansion for Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia. The Georgia Public Service Commission has green-lit $1.2 million in Universal Service Fund emergency heating assistance for struggling households. This money will help natural gas customers avoid having their heat shut off from 2027 through 2029. Commissioners approved the petition at their August meeting under Docket No. 12897. Around 5,250 households will get help during that time.

Franklin Mishoe wants to open Blind Louis Liquor Store at 752 Broad St. He's asked for an alcoholic beverage license. Mishoe runs Carolina Auto Repair near North Augusta. Augusta's Planning and Development Department backs the application. So does the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. City officials on the Public Services Committee reviewed the request Aug. 25. Louis A. Williamson owns the 5,400-square-foot building. He purchased it in 2011, sold it four years later, then bought it again this year.

Augusta University awarded 69 students the state's new DREAMS Scholarship. 444 applications flooded in during the first week. Money covered roughly one-sixth of those who sought help through the need-based program. The DREAMS Scholarship Program represents Georgia's first statewide, need-based scholarship for students at colleges in the University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia. Gov. Brian P. Kemp launched this initiative with a $325 million allocation in the state budget.

Augusta Regional Airport just grabbed more than $3 million in federal grants. The money will cover upgrades and new gear. Last week, the Augusta Commission approved two grants from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program. The first grant? A hefty $2.207 million. These funds will build the Northwest Development Roadway and Utilities Extension, creating a direct link from Cargo Road to Doug Barnard Parkway. Cargo Road stretches only a few hundred feet.

Andrew Ramon Kelley and Jonathan Ward Fetrow-Smith face charges after authorities linked them to a theft ring. The operation hit school buses across South Carolina and Georgia. Officers arrested them in June. A multi-agency investigation tracked the stolen parts for months. Thieves took catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters from buses parked at facilities.

Charles Esten paid tribute to his longtime friend and Nashville co-star Hayden Panettiere during an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry on Aug. 22, dedicating his 2024 song, "Somewhere in the Sunshine," to her memory.
