Its population was very small, and if a single automobile appeared on the streets in the course of a year, everyone within running distance would leave whatever they were doing and dash out to see the miracle on wheels. In those days all the houses were one-storied. They looked like little mushrooms peeping out from among branching trees. We lived in a little house with a large orchard.
