The unofficial election results for the Maquoketa Community School Districts special election are in. According to the Jackson County Auditor’s Office, of the 5,883 registered voters in the district, 429 cast their votes, representing just 7.29% of the voting population. For the proposed increase of the school district’s levy, 205 (47.79%) voted yes and 224 (52.21%) voted no.

Jeanette F. Gnade, 97, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, September 7, 2026, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa. Jeanette Fern Keeney was born on June 21, 1929, at Gallagher Place in Jackson County, Iowa, to Raymond Revere and Gladys Margaret (Fuller) Keeney. She grew up on a farm where she developed a strong work ethic. She was a 1947 graduate of Andrew High School. She married Carroll Charles Frederick Goetz on September 12, 1950, in Andrew, Iowa.

The Daughters of the American Revolution will host a special exhibit in Jackson County starting next week. The exhibit highlights the history of the Revolutionary War as part of the ongoing celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Robert R. “Bob” Barker, 80, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Ennoble Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Bob was born on February 14, 1946, in Clinton, Iowa, to Robert F. and Glatha (Hute) Barker. He was a 1964 graduate of Maquoketa High School and later attended barber college in Cedar Rapids, where he graduated in 1966.

Two vehicles collided in Bellevue Sunday afternoon. According to police reports, one vehicle T-boned another in front of the Casey’s on North Riverview Street, temporarily blocking traffic. Emergency services responded, but no injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and the road was reopened shortly after. No citations or charges have yet been reported. An intentional fire damaged a vacant building in Dubuque yesterday. Around 11:20 a.m., 25 Dubuque firefighters responded to Pinard Street and quickly put out the blaze. The Dubuque Fire Marshal investigated the scene and determined the fire was set deliberately. Property damage to the area is estimated at over $126,000. No injuries were reported from the fire. Terry L. Skrivseth, 84, of Bellevue, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, passed away peacefully surrounded by the family he cherished so deeply on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. Terry Lee Skrivseth was born on November 7, 1941, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Henning D. “Bud” and Marian C. (Sagers) Skrivseth. He was a 1959 graduate of Maquoketa High School and then attended Drake University in Des Moines.

Georgette Husemann, 68, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa. Georgette was born on January 13, 1958, in Haleiwa, Hawaii, the daughter of George and Dorothy (Kinokeo) Baldwin. Growing up surrounded by the beauty and warmth of the islands, Hawaii was always a special part of who Georgette was. She graduated from Waialua High School. On May 13, 1998, Georgette married Thomas Husemann Sr. in Honolulu, Hawaii.
