MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A fire broke out on a passenger ferry in waters off the western Philippines, leaving dozens of people missing, the coast guard said Thursday. At least five people were killed. So far, 42 people have been rescued and efforts are ongoing, so the count of 87 people missing may change, coast guard spokeswoman Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said in a radio interview.

Five members of a crew killed when an Amazon cargo jet smashed into their van were wrapping up their eight-hour shift cleaning planes at the Miami airport when the crash happened, lawyers for one of the victims said on Wednesday. Two other workers in the van were in the hospital for days after their Econoline van was crushed by the speeding jet that investigators said appeared to be reconsidering a landing Sunday before running out of runway.

NEW YORK (AP) — The price of oil surpassed $100 a barrel for the first time in almost six weeks after attacks on oil facilities and ships in the Middle East threatened to debilitate an already weakened supply chain. The most heavily traded contract for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, settled at $97.89 before briefly climbing past $100 early Wednesday. When oil prices spike, prices of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel also rise.

CANFIELD, Ohio (AP) — An armed man accused of charging toward Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton during a campaign stop at a fair was trying to ask the Democrat questions, a prosecutor said during the man's arraignment Tuesday. No one has publicly said what 38-year-old Patrick Havas wanted to ask Acton, but authorities have said he never brandished or unholstered the weapons he had on him and they haven't found any threats in a search of his cellphone.

A federal judge in Missouri on Tuesday temporarily blocked the state from using its old congressional districts in the November election.

KANSAS CITY – Toby Tobin, the longtime home and garden expert, once heard Saturday mornings on 98.1 KMBZ, has passed away, according to family and friends. For years Tobin helmed the Toby Tobin Radio Show, providing expert advice to listeners on a variety of topics from house to yard. In recent years he passed the mic to his son Mark Tobin, who now hosts the Tobin Home and Garden Show, still heard every Saturday morning on KMBZ in Kansas City.

LONDON (AP) — Nearly 300 flights were cancelled Tuesday because of a technical issue in the U.K. air traffic control system, the flight monitoring website Flightradar24 reported. Britain’s National Air Traffic Services said earlier Tuesday afternoon that engineers were urgently working on the issue, which was affecting departing flights. In an update, it said it has “implemented a fix and our flight system is starting to recover," and apologized for the disruptions.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Restoration work on the White House North Portico appears to be nearing completion before Chinese President Xi Jinping ’s state visit to the United States in late September. Scaffolding was being taken down Tuesday after workers over Labor Day weekend removed a shroud that had obscured the work. The Executive Mansion’s front columns had been covered since July. The work, ordered by President Donald Trump, began in June.
