Jeanette Kaye Hamlett, 83, of Edgewood, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2026, at her home. She was born on August 3, 1943, at home on the farm near Bear Creek, the daughter of Emmett and Irma (Carnicle) Shaw. Jeanette was raised in Edgewood and worked for her Grandma Shaw at the Corner Café during high school. She was a graduate of Edgewood High School. After graduation, Jeanette worked as a CNA at Mercy Hospital for several years.

Flash flooding will be a threat as we head into the weekend. A Flood Watch is in effect for a small portion of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. The greatest threat would be from 1 am to 7 pm on Saturday. The National Weather Service says heavy rainfall with repeating rounds of thunderstorms will result in 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, with localized higher amounts near 3 to 5 inches possible (10-20%).

One person was killed in a crash near Cascade early Friday morning. The accident was discovered by a Delaware County Sheriff’s deputy shortly after 3 am in the 2900 block of Goose Hill Road. The Dubuque and Delaware County Sheriff’s’s Offices responded to the scene, along with Cascade Fire and EMS. The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says an investigation revealed that an eastbound car left the roadway, traveled through the south side ditch area and struck a tree.

BY JON SWISHER – SPORTS DIRECTOR: VOLLEYBALL- Class 3A 13th-ranked West Delaware improved their record to 10-4 with a 3-0 win over Maquoketa Valley last night inside Seedorff Gymnasium. The Hawks will host their own invitational this Saturday starting at 9am. Beckman Catholic swept Alburnett 3-0. Cascade shutout Bellevue 3-0. FOOTBALL- Week 4 started in the coverage area last night as Starmont moved their contest up a night to avoid the possible rain and storms. The Stars beat Clayton Ridge 30-7.

If you’re passing through the Peosta area, you’ll want to be aware of road work. The City of Peosta announced on Thursday that, effective immediately, Cox Springs Road at the intersection of Adrina Drive/Thunder Valley Drive will be closed to all southbound traffic to Highway 20. The closure is for an upcoming deceleration lane construction project.

Maquoketa Valley is celebrating Homecoming this week. The 2026 Homecoming Court includes Dalton Africa, Eli Dougherty, Kyle Engelken and Gabe Halweg, along with Haydin Flannagan, Alaina Mead, Camryn Paris and Ella Reicher. Due to the projected forecast for Friday, the football game start time will be moved up to 5:30 pm. The King & Queen crowning will now take place at 5:15 pm in front of the football grandstands.
