As the use of cash declines, South Korea’s state mint is looking beyond coins made for everyday transactions and towards products designed to be collected or held as investments. The Korea Minting, Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corporation (KOMSCO) is joining forces with the Royal Canadian Mint to develop products that bring together the culture and natural heritage of the two countries.

On Aug. 26, a devastating mudslide in Nepal caused heavy casualties and left people missing at the Gyirong port in Gyirong county, Xigaze, southwest China's Xizang autonomous region. The disaster originated on the Nepali side of a river along the China-Nepal border. At an altitude of about 5,200 meters on the northern slope of Mount Langtang Lirung, a glacier broke apart, triggering an ice-rock avalanche.

Gyeongju will bring its ancient heritage to life after dark when the 2026 Gyeongju National Heritage Night takes place for three days from 18 to 20 September. Centred previously on Woljeonggyo Bridge and Gyochon Village, the event will expand this year to Gyeongju Eupseong Fortress, combining historical interpretation, performances, exhibitions and hands-on activities with a night market, local food and accommodation programmes.

대구 달성군에서 소나무재선충병 피해가 확산하는 가운데 산림청이 비슬산과 유가사 일대 등 보전 가치가 높은 산림을 중심으로 하반기 방제 체계를 다시 점검했다. 지난 6월 군 전체가 특별방제구역으로 지정된 이후 현장 대응 조직과 지역별 방제 전략을 얼마나 신속하게 가동하느냐가 추가 확산을 막을 핵심 과제로 떠오르고 있다. 박은식 산림청장은 9일 대구광역시 달성군 유가읍 양리 일원의 소나무재선충병 방제 현장을 찾아 피해 상황과 방제 추진 현황을 살폈다. 현장에서는 올해 하반기 방제 방향과 함께 피해 확산을 차단하기 위한 대응 방안이 논의됐다. 달성군은 최근 재선충병 피해가 넓어지면서 지난 6월 군 전역이 특별방제구역으로 지정됐다. 특별방제구역은 일반적인 방제만으로 확산을 억제하기 어렵거나 긴급한 예찰·방제 조치가 필요하다고 판단되는 지역에 관리 역량을 집중하기 위한 제도다.

As pine wilt disease continues to spread in Dalseong County, Daegu, the Korea Forest Service has carried out a fresh review of its second-half control measures, focusing on forests of high conservation value around Biseulsan Mountain and Yugasa Temple. With the entire county designated a special control zone in June, the speed at which authorities can mobilise field teams and implement locally tailored measures is emerging as a key factor in preventing further spread.

현금 사용이 줄어드는 흐름 속에서 한국조폐공사가 ‘쓰는 동전’보다 ‘소장하고 투자하는 주화’ 시장으로 보폭을 넓힌다. 세계적인 기념주화·불리온 사업 역량을 가진 캐나다 조폐국과 손잡고 양국의 문화와 자연을 한 제품에 담는 공동 사업을 추진하면서다. 국내 조폐산업의 무게중심을 전통적인 유통주화 제조에서 고부가가치 수집·문화상품으로 넓히려는 행보로 풀이된다. 한국조폐공사는 지난달 28일 캐나다 오타와에서 캐나다 조폐국(Royal Canadian Mint·RCM)과 양국 주화산업 발전을 위한 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했다고 9일 밝혔다. 협약에 따라 두 기관은 각자가 축적한 조폐 기술과 사업 경험을 공유하고 기념주화와 기념메달, 조폐공사가 ‘예술형 주화’로 부르는 불리온 코인 등 비유통 주화 사업 전반에서 협력 체계를 구축하기로 했다. 이번 협약의 핵심은 단순한 기술 교류보다 공동 상품화에 있다.

GC녹십자가 국내에서 출발한 백신 후보물질을 미국 별도법인에 이전해 글로벌 자본과 임상 역량을 결합한 뒤 글로벌 빅파마의 인수까지 끌어낸 ‘뉴코(NewCo)’ 전략으로 오픈이노베이션 성과를 인정받았다. 단순 기술수출에 머물지 않고 후보물질의 임상 가치를 해외에서 키운 뒤 성과를 다시 연구개발에 투입하는 구조를 구축했다는 점에서 K-바이오의 새로운 사업화 모델로도 주목된다. GC녹십자는 9일 보건복지부가 주최하고 한국보건산업진흥원이 주관한 ‘2026 오픈이노베이션 활성화 유공 포상’에서 한국제약바이오협회장 표창을 수상했다. 이날 서울 포시즌스호텔에서 열린 ‘2026 글로벌 오픈이노베이션 위크-바이오헬스’에서는 기술협력과 공동연구, 투자유치, 기술이전 등을 통해 바이오·헬스 분야의 글로벌 협력 생태계 확대에 기여한 개인과 단체에 대한 포상이 이뤄졌다. 시상식에서는 노연홍 한국제약바이오협회장이 신수경 GC녹십자 의학본부장에게 표창을 수여했다. 이번 수상의 출발점은 2017년으로 거슬러 올라간다.

천년 고도 경주의 국가유산을 밤길로 잇는 ‘2026 경주국가유산야행’이 오는 18일부터 20일까지 사흘간 열린다. 월정교와 교촌마을을 중심으로 진행돼 온 행사 무대를 올해는 경주읍성까지 넓히고, 역사 해설과 공연·전시·체험, 야시장과 먹거리·숙박 연계 프로그램을 한데 묶어 경주의 밤 자체를 하나의 체류형 문화관광 콘텐츠로 만들겠다는 구상이다. 경주시와 경북도, 국가유산청이 주최하고 경주문화원이 주관하는 올해 행사는 매일 오후 6시부터 11시까지 진행된다. 주제는 ‘파편(破片)-지켜 온, 그리고 지켜낼’. 경주 곳곳에 흩어진 유산과 역사적 흔적을 하나의 동선과 이야기로 연결해 과거의 유산을 현재의 도시 경험으로 되살린다는 의미를 담았다. 올해로 11회째를 맞은 행사 프로그램은 지난해 33개에서 45개로 늘었다. 프로그램은 야경(夜景), 야로(夜路), 야설(夜說), 야화(夜話), 야사(夜史), 야시(夜市), 야식(夜食), 야숙(夜宿) 등 이른바 ‘8야(夜)’를 중심으로 구성된다.

Gyeonggi Province has set its living wage for 2027 at 12,995 won per hour, an increase of 443 won, or 3.5 percent, from this year’s 12,552 won. The provincial government announced on Sept. 9 that the new rate was determined after taking into account inflation, workers’ living stability and the province’s financial conditions. Based on a standard 209-hour working month, the 2027 living wage translates into monthly earnings of 2,715,955 won, up 92,587 won from this year.
