U.S. Department of Transportation, Courtesy AURORA — The Aurora Police Department participated in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over national traffic enforcement campaign from Aug. 21 through Sept. 7. During the campaign, officers issued 70 traffic warnings and 9 citations for a total of 79 traffic offenses.

Barb Paulick is a new member of Grand Island's City Council. Mayor Roger Steele appointed her Sept. 8 to serve the remainder of the term of her late husband, Mike Paulick, who died Aug. 25. Paulick’s husband, Mike Paulick, 75, died Aug. 25.

Railroad crossing at night, (Brian Neben, Central Nebraska Today) OXFORD — Weather permitting, a railroad crossing project will begin Monday, Sept. 14 on U.S. Highway (US-136) at reference post 12.72, two miles east of Oxford, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The crossing repair work is being done by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF). Follow the marked detour, which will utilize Nebraska Highway 89 (N-89) and Nebraska Highway 46 (N-46).

KEARNEY — The Kearney High School Bearcat Marching Band plans to soar high, but not too high, in their show “Icarus” during the 2026 marching band season. The members of the marching band could be found where they are each morning, at the practice field under the lights prior to sunrise. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, the band was working on setting their final spots in their first movement.

Kearney – Downtown Kearney recently saw many of its trees, light posts and benches wrapped in a net of crocheted coverings from several different groups as part of the Kearney Creative District.

It was a hot day for running Cross Country at the Centura Hills Golf Course for the Centura Invite in Cairo, the heat didn’t stop the St. Paul Wildcats from having a good day on the course. On the Boys side, St. Paul finished with three runners in the top 17 paced by Eli Sladek who finished runner up for his second consecutive race after a second place finish in Gibbon last week. Aiden Lukasiewicz and Tate Busch finished 16th and 17th respectively to help St. Paul finish in the top 5.

KEARNEY — A conditional use permit for a data center to be located east of Kearney received approval from the Kearney city council, with stricter regulations in place during their meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8. There was standing room only in the council chambers for the discussion over the data center conditional use permit (CUP) and new regulations that were to be voted upon.

Kearney Catholic Softball. (Steve Moseley, Central Nebraska Today) KEARNEY – The Kearney Catholic softball team erupted for seven runs in the first inning Tuesday night and proved to be too much for McCook to overcome, as the Stars rolled to a 10-0 victory in four innings. Kearney Catholic batted around in the first inning, drawing two walks, swiping three bases and collecting four hits to grab an early 7-0 advantage. The Stars added two more runs in the second inning.
