KRBD strives to inform, educate, entertain, and engage our listeners through national, state, and local news broadcasts, with a variety of national shows that not only entertain, but educate, as well as an eclectic mix of locally produced music shows. We air weekly community interviews during Morning Edition covering a wide range of topics from safety measures to child care, public health concerns to gardening, to events that the public can attend or how they can volunteer their time and skills. Our local City Council meetings, Borough Assembly meetings and school board meeting are covered. During election season we broadcast candidate forums and open our phones so that community members can call in with their questions. All this is broadcast on the air, featured on our website, offered on Facebook and Twitter, and streamed from our website. Source

Amid declining population, Southeast Alaska sees record job count

(Leila Kheiry/KRBD) The presentation at Southeast Conference’s economic summit in Ketchikan last week largely compared changes from 2024 to 2025. Job growth was most prominent in the seafood, tourism, private health care and construction sectors, with almost 600 total jobs added throughout the region. Petersburg led the way in job growth, largely because of seafood processing jobs.

Ketchikan code change allows for removal of borough appointed officials
Ketchikan’s borough offices are in the White Cliff Building (KRBD staff photo) More than a dozen people took to the podium during Monday’s Ketchikan borough assembly meeting to speak in favor of the code change before it passed unanimously. Emily Edenshaw is the tribal administrator and CEO for Ketchikan Indian Community. She said the planning commissioner’s comments against the tribe did more than just cause harm.

There is a special Senior Safety program Thursday, a presentation on Brain Health, crafts and activities for tweens and adults, and a special yoga session. Arts Council Report
The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council Main Street Gallery. (KRBD staff) The current gallery show “All Aboard” is on display until the end of the month, Wearable Art Show tickets are available for artist members and above, the Fil-Am Fest is this Saturday, models are needed for life drawing classes in November and there are several calls to artists. Ketchikan’s unofficial election results are in
Ketchikan No.1 precinct, located at the Gateway Recreation Center. (Sydney Dauphinais/KRBD) Tuesday was Ketchikan’s municipal election, and preliminary results are in. Polls were open most of the day, although some people voted early. Residents in city limits voted in both the city and borough election. For the borough, the unofficial ballot count was 2,048 ballots. The city tallied 1,040 ballots. Voter turnout was 21% and 19%, respectively, and includes absentee, special needs and questioned ballots.
Hunter rescued from remote area near Ketchikan
(Sydney Dauphinais/KRBD) A Ketchikan man was hospitalized for hypothermia after being rescued from a remote area northeast of town last week. Alaska Wildlife Troopers were called to Saddle Lakes, about 25 miles via gravel road from Ketchikan on Wednesday evening. They were responding to an SOS activation from a satellite communication device. According to Troopers, the man’s truck and ATV were found first. Family members assisted in the search, which was temporarily suspended early Thursday morning.
