Kpreps.com has released its week 2 high school football rankings. Lincoln jumps two spots to #2 in 8-Player Division 1 after a 60-12 opening night win over Lakeside. Central Plains moves into the 8-Player D1 rankings at #4 after topping previously ranked Victoria 28-18. Sylvan-Lucas (1-0) moves up one spot to #4 in 8-Player Division 2. Osborne (1-0) and Victoria (0-1) after both receiving consideration. In 3A, Hoisington (1-0) remains fifth.

Sports Written By: Erik Stone Published Date: 09-09-2026 USD 407 Champion Logo The Russell Lady Broncos Volleyball team hit the road to WaKeeney on Tuesday for a triangular hosted by Trego Community High School. Russell was defeated in its first match by Smith Center in straight sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-21. Then in the nightcap, host Trego prevailed over the Lady Broncos in three sets by scores of 17-25, 25-23 and 25-22.

Resurfacing work on U.S. 24 in Graham County is expected to begin this week. The Kansas Department of Transportation project involves a mill and overlay on 17.5 miles of roadway from the Sheridan County line to the east city limits of Hill City. In addition to U.S. 24, K-84 into Penokee and K-85 into Morland will also be resurfaced. Work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 9 and be completed in mid-October, conditions permitting.

Rolling Hills Zoo, west of Salina, announces the birth of its first spotted hyena cub, born September 3. The cub is the first offspring for both parents, making the arrival a milestone for the zoo and its participation in the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s (AZA) cooperative breeding programs. The cub’s mother, Maxi - born in 2012, came to Rolling Hills Zoo from Zoo Miami in Florida. The father, Kito, was born in 2022 at Hattiesburg Zoo in Mississippi.

Local Written By: Mike McKenna Published Date: 09-08-2026 Russell County Courthouse Russell County Commissioners met Tuesday at the courthouse in Russell and approved the 2027 county budget along with fire districts #1 through #5 budgets. The county budget, which will be revenue neutral, will be $17,923,390, levying $9,043,790 with an estimated mill levy of 79.029.

The summer of 2026 started off with rain and below normal temperatures, but a change in the weather pattern in early July has since brought consistent dry and hot conditions to the Russell area, Kansas and much of the Central Plains. So how hot has it been in Russell? As of September 8, the Russell Airport has recorded daytime highs at or above 100 degrees 21 times. The first 100 degree day came in May and second not until July.

The Russell High School Cross Country team began the 2026 season on Saturday, September 5 at the TMP-Marian Invitational in Hays. The meet which began a half hour earlier than scheduled in an attempt to combat the heat was still held in challenging conditions. Averie Counts brought home a 12th place medal in the girls varsity race with a time of 22:56. Freshman Adam Hoch, competing in his first High School varsity race, used a late surge to earn a 10th place medal in a time of 19:02.

The combines are rolling and the grain trucks are traveling the roads to get corn delivered to our local elevator. While we actually started picking corn in August, the hot summer days have continued into September. The thermometers have shown triple-digit temperatures for many consecutive days now. Add in the consistent Kansas wind and you have what feels like a blast furnace outside most days.

The body of a missing 62-year-old man from Great Bend was found on Saturday in Ellsworth County.
