Earlier this month, Americans celebrated our nation’s 250th birthday. My family and I took time to reflect on the extraordinary events of 1776 and those individuals who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to establish the greatest country the world has known. Now, I’m encouraging Nebraskans to consider another form of freedom: personal financial independence. Financial independence doesn’t mean being wealthy.

(HOLDREGE, Neb.)  – The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District’s board of directors heard a structural analysis report on the supply canal hydroplants at their July board meeting that was held on Tuesday (July 8) in Holdrege. Central Civil Engineer McKinley Harm reported on several items from a report that was compiled by Mead & Hunt from a structural analysis of the Jeffrey, Johnson No. 1 and Johnson No. 2 hydroplants.

York, Neb. — York County Sheriff Paul Vrbka is warning the public about a scam that cost a local man over $30,000 dollars. The victim thought he was buying heavy equipment from an out-of-state dealer. He found the ad online and believed the company was real. However, the phone number he used did not belong to that business. He was talking to a scammer the whole time. The business was not actually located where the online ad said it was. The man wired the money, but no equipment ever arrived.

A week that began with a weather-fueled rally and ended with USDA’s July WASDE report left grain traders focused on one overriding question: can this crop deliver the yields needed to satisfy demand? On this week’s Weekly Market Roundup, Jim McCormick and Brian Splitt of AgMarket.net said USDA’s latest balance sheet adjustments provided fresh support to corn, but weather will ultimately determine where prices go next.

LINCOLN – TeamMates Mentoring energized chapters for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year during the July 8th-9th Annual Conference hosted at Nebraska Innovation Campus. The two-day Heart of Mentoring conference was attended by 270 program coordinators, board members, and building coordinators from the 189 TeamMates chapters across six states. Attendees dove into the core of mentoring and collaborated in multiple breakout sessions.

LEXINGTON, NE – The Dawson County Fair is slated for Wednesday, July 15th, through Sunday, July 19th, with the theme “America’s 250th: Past, Present, & Possibilities”. All five days of the fair features a full schedule with lots to do for all ages. Things kick off right away on Wednesday with 4-H and FFA events. Sarah Fanning, Dawson County 4-H Extension Educator, gives a rundown of events for 4-H and FFA for the entire fair. The market livestock premium auction is Saturday, at 5pm.

COZAD — Two new sculptures are now on display in Cozad as part of the statewide Sculpture Walk Across Nebraska program. The pieces, Lumenfly in Veterans Memorial Park and Feather in the Wilson Public Library Art Garden, were dedicated Thursday during an afternoon arts celebration that also included a preview performance of the Crane River Theater Company’s upcoming production of Disney’s Frozen.
