Hours after U.S. imposes tariffs, Canada says it'll strike back starting Sept. 8
Updated August 22, 2026 at 11:31 AM CDT Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says his country will initiate retaliatory tariffs against U.S. imports starting Sept. 8. The move came hours after the Trump administration began enforcing 50% tariffs on a slew of Canadian goods. Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada fell apart Friday night, shortly before a midnight deadline for the 50% tariffs to take effect on $20 billion worth of Canadian products.
In which 'Winnie-the-Pooh' turns 100
100 years ago, Edward Bear — also known as Winnie-the-Pooh — also known as Pooh — went bump, bump, bump down the stairs for the first time. Though he made an earlier appearance in the 1924 book of poems When We Were Very Young — "Our Teddy Bear is short and fat, Which is not to be wondered at" — 1926's Winnie-the-Pooh was author A.A. Milne and illustrator Ernest H. Shepard's first collection of stories about the honey-loving bear.

U.S. imposes 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products
WASHINGTON — The United States imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products early Saturday, and Canada immediately said it would retaliate, after last-ditch negotiations failed to resolve the latest strain in already tense relations between the historic allies. President Donald Trump's import taxes will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year, including products ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.
