May 19, 2022 A Red Flag fire danger warning is in effect Thursday throughout the Sacramento River Valley and foothills. The dry, hot and windy conditions prompted the warning, which continues through Friday evening. Evacuation warnings were issued Wednesday in the Palermo area of Butte County due to a fire that ended up burning two outbuildings, a travel trailer and about 17 acres. Another fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in West Cottonwood.

May 19, 2022 Redding Fire Department is investigating a vegetation fire in West Redding. The fire was reported shortly after 5AM Wednesday off West Street in the Linden Avenue area. That’s the road that runs along the bottom of the hill beneath Mercy Medical Center. It’s a popular area for homeless camps, which apparently was the source. The first arriving engine company reported about a quarter acre burning and called for a full wildland response.

May 19, 2022 A dog that saved her Trinity County owner from a Mountain Lion is expected to survive, and a GoFundMe page has far exceeded its goal to help with vet bills. Monday afternoon Erin Wilson was driving on Highway 299 and stopped at a picnic area near Big Bar to take her dog Eva for a walk. The 2-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois was on the path a little bit ahead of Wilson when she noticed movement next to her as the Mountain Lion swiped across her left shoulder, scratching her.

May 18, 2022 The Redding City Council approved in concept a temporary housing site at the St. James Lutheran Church on Shasta View Drive. Known as the Goodwater Crossing, the site will consist of four sleeping cabins to begin with and could expand to up to 12 when fully funded. Each resident would be able to stay at the site for up to 10 months. Neighbors cited concerns Tuesday night.

May 18, 2022 A Corning man found guilty of child molestation by a Tehama County jury earlier this year has been given an extremely long sentence. 56-year-old Alejandro Uriquidez was convicted February 8th of 19 felony counts of forcible sexual assault over the course of ten years against three young female family members. The victims reported the assaults to a Corning Police Officer in 2019. The incidents happened between 2001 and 2009. Uriquidez has been sentenced to 225 years in state prison.

Shasta County Reports 5 Additional COVID-19 Deaths During Weekly Update May 18, 2022 COVID-19 continues to claim lives. Another 5 Shasta County residents were confirmed in the past week to have been killed by Covid, ranging in age from their 60s to over 89. The transmission case rate has edged up to the substantial range, at 73 per 100,000. 7 Covid patients are hospitalized, 1 in intensive care. Every home in the U.S. can order free Covid tests at covidtests.gov.

May 18, 2022 A serial killer who murdered people in Butte and Tehama Counties while working for a tree trimming service has been convicted in a jury trial. In May of 2020, Tehama County Deputies were called to a home on Josephine Avenue in Los Molinos after 91-year-old Homer Severs, whose throat had been slashed, made it to a neighboring family member’s home.

May 18, 2022 Another big drug bust has been reported by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office. Last Thursday they said the Domestic Highway Enforcement Team was working Interstate Five north of Yreka when they stopped a Kia sedan with Wisconsin plates for multiple traffic violations. It was occupied by 28-year-old Bryce Crawford and 18-year-old Breanna Gary, both from Woodstock, Georgia. Agents said they developed probable cause for a search through various “criminal indicators”.

May 18, 2022 State Fish and Wildlife Officers are investigating a reported Mountain Lion attack in Trinity County. Monday afternoon Erin Wilson was driving on Highway 299 and stopped at a picnic area near Big Bar to take her dog for a walk. The dog was on the path a little bit ahead of Wilson when she noticed movement next to her as the Mountain Lion swiped across her left shoulder, drawing blood. She screamed and her dog Eva, a Belgian Malinois, ran back and took on the lion.
