Sandhill cranes are reliable visitors in spring and fall at the Dale Saunders Crane Sanctuary in Trapper Creek. According to Great Land Trust Executive Director Ellen Kazary (Kuh-Zaree), the Sanctuary was donated to the Trust in the early 2000s by local Dale Saunders. “It was officially completed in 2007. That’s when the property came into Great Land Trust’s ownership.” Saunders started planting barley one year and the cranes just appeared.

Nearly $1.8 million is now approved for constructing a new bridge in Trapper Creek. The existing bridge is more than 30 years old and serves several landowners at the southern end of Bradley Road and according to Mat-Su Borough Engineer Mike Campfield, has documented problems. Campfield says the bridge replacement will improve public safety, maintain reliable access for residents and emergency services, and provide a structure that meets current design standards.

This week on Su Valley Voice, host Phillip Manning was joined by Tom Adams, Mat-Su Borough Public Works Director, and borough environmental engineer Mike Canfield to discuss the Mat-Su's current efforts to address rapid erosion in Talkeetna. Orion LeCroy and Burrell Nickeson from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities also joined the program to discuss plans to protect the Talkeetna Spur Road.

by: Marion Chesterton - KTNA In Tuesday’s  primary election, Mat-Su region voters eliminated a Republican candidate from the five-way race for House District 30. And in the three-way Senate District O race, the two Republican candidates outperformed the only Democrat. All three will appear in the November general election. House District 30 covers Houston and Big Lake to the south and communities along the Parks Highway to the north.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced that it is prohibiting the retention of coho salmon, 16 inches or greater in length, within the Susitna and Little Susitna River drainages. The order is effective from August 19th through the remainder of 2026. According to Fish and Game, the Little Susitna River sustainable escapement goal for coho salmon is between 9,000–17,000 fish.

KTNA’s Colleen Love has this story… 20260810Halfway Nowhere A Los Angeles-based film crew has spent the last month filming a movie in Talkeetna called Halfway Nowhere. Finn Benischek, cinematographer for the movie, grew up in Talkeetna. While studying in the film department at Chapman University in Los Angeles, he met Film Director Aiden Forte.

The Sunshine Community Health Center was awarded a grant of over $200,000 by The Alaska Department of Health last week. In early August, the Department of Health announced the first projects to be awarded funds through the Rural Health Transformation Program. The announcement begins a series of monetary awards designed to strengthen access to health care in communities across Alaska. The Sunshine Community Health Center plans to build documentation and data infrastructure with the funds.

This time the alignment will create a Total Solar Eclipse for a narrow band in the North Atlantic, from Greenland to Spain. However, much of the northern portion of North America will have a Partial Eclipse.
