After serving as Truman State University’s president for 10 years, Sue Thomas announced her plan to retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year July 9. Editor-in-Chief Kaylee O’Dell sat down with Thomas to discuss how she became interested in the role, her time at the University, and what to expect from her in the upcoming year. Q: What drove you to take the chance on applying to be president? A: It was interesting.

A multitude of young teenagers arrived on Truman State University’s campus this past summer for two sessions of Joseph Baldwin Academy, a summer camp designed to prepare middle-school-aged students for college life. Participants are selected among highly talented applicants in grades seven through nine. When selected, students get to choose which of the three-week-long sessions they would like to attend and which class they would like to attend throughout the session.

Kirksville and OATS Transit run the Kirk-Tran bus service. The Kirk-Tran operates on an hourly route – Monday through Thursday, the Tran goes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Fridays, it drives from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and on Saturdays, it cycles from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. A one-way trip costs $3, or riders can purchase a $20 punch card.

Words and images float in the air, music rings out, reaching the ears of all present. This is an open mic hosted by TruPoets, the poetry club at Truman State University, every semester. The last one was April 22. TruPoets tries to host at least two open mics per semester. Before each open mic, meetings are spent workshopping poems from members and offering critiques. Caitlin Hill, a freshman studio art and creative writing major, found much inspiration from going to TruPoets meetings.

As mist pooled at her feet, she swung her sword and landed the finishing blow, vanquishing the beast. Tiamat’s head toppled onto the stage, and the victorious Agnes sank to her knees. The win came at the cost of accepting the death of her sister, Tilly Evans, played by Aliza Carlson.

Long-time women’s head tennis coach and math professor, Coach Steven “Steve” Smith, is retiring at the end of the 2026 spring season. Smith has been coaching the tennis team for a total of 21 years. Smith started as a volunteer coach for 14 years, serving seven years as an assistant coach and the last seven years as the head coach. Smith said his time as a coach was spent making his athletes not only good tennis players, but good people.

For the past year, Barnett Hall has been undergoing renovations to build a new space for the Department of Public Safety which has raised concerns among their neighbors, the Truman Media Network. This construction included adding new doorways at either end of a hallway with keypads and renovated rooms tailored to DPS’s needs. Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Tim Walston said those doorways were added to limit general public access to DPS’s internal spaces.
