Isaias strengthened Thursday into a Category 1 hurricane as it moved across the Gulf of Mexico toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, where forecasters warned of dangerous storm surge, heavy rain and damaging winds in coastal communities from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. Isaias became the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season late Wednesday, ending an unusually long stretch without a hurricane in the basin.

Security personnel fatally shot a suspect carrying a firearm and an edged weapon on Thursday morning inside the main lobby of the Fred D. Thompson Federal Building & Courthouse in downtown Nashville. The confrontation occurred at the primary security screening area utilized by the general public. First responders dispatched to the scene transported the suspect to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

George Strait will be honored by the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame with the Career Maker Award, recognizing his decades of influence on the careers of the organization’s songwriters. A Southern California couple accused of managing an illegal surrogacy scheme involving at least 21 children were taken into police custody on multiple child abuse charges. Authorities arrested 65-year-old Guojun Xuan and 38-year-old Silvia Zhang following an extensive investigation into allegations of child endangerment, conspiracy to commit child abuse, and witness dissuasion. The investigation began when a 2-month-old infant was hospitalized with severe cranial injuries.

Federal law enforcement authorities have taken an 18-year-old Minnesota man into custody following an undercover counterterrorism operation that disrupted an alleged plan to execute a mass shooting at the Mall of America. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested in a public park located in Richfield, Minnesota, after allegedly attempting to purchase weaponry to carry out the assault in support of the Islamic State group.
