For the fourth year running, a team from the EECS Department has won the Best Poster Award at the Quantum Computing User Forum (QCUF) 2026, hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Led by Professor Esam El-Araby, the team tackled some of the toughest equations in science and engineering — the kind that describe how fluids flow or how nuclear reactors behave.

A common misperception exists that electrocardiograms (ECGs) simply contain data about heart activity. However, modern ECGs enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI) can reveal a patient’s sex, age, race, and even exact identity, raising fresh privacy concerns. To address this, researchers from the University of Kansas have developed a privacy-preserving AI model called PP-VAE that protects personally sensitive data while retaining clinically useful information.

We are proud to announce that Erik Perrins, University Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science and department chair, played a key role in the success of NASA’s recent Artemis II mission. His research on low-density parity check (LDPC) error-correcting codes was instrumental in establishing a reliable, high-bandwidth data transmission link from the Orion capsule to Earth, enabling the clear video and audio feeds from the farthest humans have ever traveled.

We’re pleased to share that Derek Zomer, a member of our department, was recently recognized for his participation in the 2026 cohort of KU’s Staff Fellows Program. This competitive, HR-coordinated leadership opportunity brings together staff from across the university to tackle strategic campus projects.

Our nation marks 250 years this summer, and while the accomplishments and shortcomings of this nation have been documented and debated ceaselessly, I like to think that one unalloyed good of our American experiment is the freedom of speech.

A paper co-authored by KU EECS Ph.D. student Connor Sullivan and his peers in Professor Heechul Yun's lab won Best Student Paper at IEEE RTAS 2026, the top venue in embedded real-time systems. Their paper, "Per-Bank Memory Bandwidth Regulation for Predictable and Performant Real-Time Systems," addresses bank-level interference in modern DRAMs and presents an innovative regulator that achieves over 5x improvement versus competing methods.

When the University of Kansas School of Law welcomed Professor Vera Korzun to its faculty this fall, the school gained not only an experienced teacher but also a scholar whose career spans continents and two decades in the classroom. After earning her first law degree in her home country of Belarus under the civil law tradition, she pursued additional studies in the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Germany and the U.S., earning at least one law degree in each country.
