Some voices remain with us long after the speaker is gone. President Russell M. Nelson’s is one of those voices. On September 27, 2025, after 101 years of life and more than four decades as an Apostle of the Lord, President Nelson left this mortal journey. Yet, on this September 9—the anniversary of his birth—his voice does not seem distant to me. If anything, I find myself listening more carefully. His words continue to echo: Hear Him. Keep on the covenant path. Think celestial. Let God prevail.

We have been working to prepare Five Day, Auto, and Workplace kits. You have seen many lists describing the items you should have in your kits. We are going to assume you have a list so we are going to concentrate how to use items in them. Most lists include mylar blankets, as they should. They are cheap, small, and light weight making them a no brainer for tossing into your kits.

It was the 1960s, and there were lots of social challenges. But in one small, rural town, the biggest challenge was keeping a teacher for their one-room school. The children weren’t really bad; they were mostly stubborn and a bit obnoxious. Many of them struggled to see how “book learning,” as they called it, had any value in their lives. This was especially true of the teenagers.

In the early 1980s, I was working my first cases as a sexual assault investigator. It would be several years before I supervised my own unit and made the decisions about booking suspects. But as a young detective, those decisions belonged to somebody else. My partner and I had been working one case especially hard. We developed a suspect who voluntarily came to the station to be interviewed. We knew he was unlikely to confess, but we had another plan.

When we are inclined to justify our anger at our children, we may point to the scriptural directive: “Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost” (Doctrine and Covenants 121:43). There it is: sharpness! Surely that means there are times when parents ought to get tough. But notice what the Lord actually says. When reproof is necessary, it should be given with sharpness—with clarity, precision, and directness. Sharpness is not the same as harshness.
