When I was 22, my boyfriend Jason and I moved across the country from the suburbs of Chicago to Albuquerque, New Mexico, sight unseen, with the $8,000 I’d saved by teaching voice and piano lessons. We were moving to Albuquerque so I could write a novel. We were also moving to Albuquerque to get away from everyone who thought I shouldn’t be with Jason. Once we were in the Land of Enchantment, Jason refused to teach me how to drive stick, which meant I couldn’t drive our only car.
