One minute, you are crying; the next minute, you are laughing; and the minute after that, you are reflecting deeply. Only Gregory Boyle can give that feeling. He makes you laugh like an idiot, he makes you reflect like Socrates, and he makes you cry like David. He is not just Gregory Boyle. He is Fr. Gregory Boyle. A Jesuit priest who found his calling amongst the gangs.
The Best Book On India
I thought this book would take months to finish. I was wrong. It took days. Ramachandra Guha is a writer that keeps you on the edge. He makes you cancel your dinner parties and lunch dates, postpone your essential activities, and shift your sleeping time. All for what? A history book! India After Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha. THE SCARCITY OF TRUE FRIENDS
THE SCARCITY OF TRUE FRIENDS Absalom had just conducted one of the most impressive coups in history. Absalom was not an invader or someone from a distance. He was David's son. A son had risen against his father and removed the father from power. David was lucky to leave the Kingdom alive. But this is not about David and Absalom. This is about David and Ahitophel. Ahitophel was David's bosom friend. They come from back in the day. They grew up in the trenches together.
The Books I Read In March 2023
Whew. The month of March is gone. April is here. The first quarter of 2023 is gone. 25% of the year is gone. How far have you come to your goals? Any progress? Have you built that new habit yet? Are you still following the schedules you created in January? I hope you are. I've been struggling. I'm six days behind in my Bible In A Year Reading plan. I hope to catch up soon. You should try to catch up too. Yes, being alive is a gift in itself. Be grateful for it. Also, make the best of it.
Smile for the camera, Professor Einstein!
When the photographer Arthur Sasse asked physicist and scientist Albert Einstein to smile for the camera on his 72nd birthday on 14 March 1951 – this is the image that was taken. Einstein was tired of smiling at all the photographers and instead decided to stick out his tongue. Einstein himself later used the image on greetings cards that he sent to friends.
Book Review: Titan by Ron Chernow
This is the book that has taken me the longest time to read. It is an 800+ magnum opus. I started reading it sometime in 2015; I’ve been on and off since then. I completed it last week. Titan is a comprehensive book. The most comprehensive book about John D Rockefeller Sr. contained so much information that I felt it had too much at some point, but that's incorrect. This should be the standard for biographies.
Book Review: My Time As Chaplain by Nathaniel Bivan
I appreciate this book for two reasons. One, it is the documented life of a man who was a public servant. Secondly, it was an easy read. I read it in one sitting. It has been my opinion for a long time that Nigerians lack the record of their public servants. Presidents donāt have memoirs. Public figures donāt have memoirs. Governors donāt have memoirs. A public servant spends more than 40 years in the public space, retires, and still refuses to put anything on record.
What I Read In February 2023
The month of February is gone. The days are long, but the years are short. Just yesterday, it was January 1st. 2 days ago, it was February 1st. This is March 2nd. What's the point? Time waits for no one. Whether or not you make the most of the time, it will pass by, and you can’t get it again. Time wasted can never be recovered. Make the most of it. What did I read In February 2023 This powerful self-help book helps you check the most dangerous part of you – your ego.
BOOK REVIEW: THE QUEST FOR CHARACTER BY MASSIMO PIGLIUCCI
Hello Bookfriend. I finished reading ‚ÄúThe Quest For Character‚ÄĚ by Massimo Pigliucci yesterday. The book begins with a conversation between Socrates and his student, Alcibiades. Much of it draws from the teachings of the stoics, which begins with Socrates. It is partly biographical and partly commentary. The central question Massimo seeks to explore is how do develop good character. In the first place, can people become good?
Book Review: Being Nixon by Evan Thomas
Nixon could easily have become one of the greatest American presidents. Even with his tainted legacy, his record is impressive. Richard Nixon was a man who believed he was destined for greatness. He got married to a woman who believed in his greatness. When he was about to quit, his wife, Pat, often encouraged him to stay on and fight. It was a power couple. Always encouraging each other. There is no question about the genius of Richard Nixon or his understanding of history, human nature, and power.
