The tender uses a portion of the funding received through Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (pEPR) by its six constituent boroughs. WLWA is made up of Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Ealing and Richmond which are understood to have collectively received approximately £27 million in funding.

The Environment Agency contacted Cheshire Police last week (7 August 2026) for assistance with an arrest as part of an ongoing investigation into a large-scale illegal waste site on agricultural land off Coal Pit Lane. Both organisations attended the site as part of enforcement activity, with a 69-year-old local man arrested on suspicion of waste offences. He has since been released on bail while investigations continue.

The event, co-hosted by CIWM and RWM Expo, takes place on the opening evening of RWM Expo at The Vox Conference Venue, Birmingham, right next door to the NEC Birmingham, and is expected to draw more than 900 professionals from across the waste, recycling, resource and energy management community. Doors open at 7:00pm with an arrival drinks reception, followed by a welcome address at 7:40pm.

An estimated 5,000 cubic metres of waste, which appears to include the contents of household skips, was discovered alongside evidence that heavy goods equipment had been used to create a soil embankment around the site. The embankment is understood to have been used to shield the waste-tipping activity from public view. An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “This is a sickening case of large-scale illegal waste dumping, and we share the public’s disgust.

The glasses are typically manufactured from thin, coated or laminated cardboard, while their lenses contain a polymer solar-filter film, which means that the different materials need to be separated before the cardboard frames can be recycled. With no official sales figures available for the specialist glasses, the exact number expected to be discarded is unclear.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the site on Marston Road, Eynesbury, at 10.52am yesterday (11 August 2026), after reports of a building fire. Crews from Wisbech, March, Chatteris, Yaxley, Cambridge, Sawtry, Littleport and St Neots, alongside crews from Bedfordshire, attended the incident. Firefighters arrived to find a “large, well-developed fire” involving recycled materials.

The regulation entered into force on 11 February 2025, but its general application begins today (12 August 2026), replacing the previous Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive to establish harmonised rules across the EU. The PPWR covers all packaging and packaging waste, regardless of material or origin, with requirements spanning packaging manufacturing through to waste management and prevention.

The government has announced plans to change planning law so that new shops selling e-cigarettes and vapes in England will require planning permission before opening. The definition of a vape shop will also be tightened to prevent businesses from avoiding the rules by describing themselves as general convenience stores or retailers.

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the incident at 2:34am on 11 August 2026, where an estimated 50–100 tonnes of mixed domestic waste had caught fire. At the height of the incident, six fire engines, a turntable ladder, an aerial ladder platform, a water carrier and several officers attended. Firefighters used four breathing apparatus sets and four main jets to tackle the blaze.
