January 18, 2022 | 1 pm Eastern Several incidents have made headlines involving EMS administration of ketamine following an interaction between the patient and law enforcement. At least one of these incidents involves criminal charges against EMS personnel. While ketamine administration is not warranted in most interactions between law enforcement and resisting subjects, it remains a valuable, lifesaving tool for certain agitated subjects in order to facilitate further medical evaluation.

Attitudes, personality differences and managing conflict are all important factors to consider when dealing with humans, but what about our organizations? Are there complexities associated with life within the walls of our respective agencies?

Earlier this year, fire departments across the country marked the Firefighter Safety Stand Down. The theme of the event was “rebuilding rehab”—a reflection on the critical role rehab plays in mitigating the physiological and mental impacts of a long and intense incident. For most firefighters, rehab is something we do to help us recover and be ready to respond to the next emergency. We probably don’t think a lot about it.
