THE MINISTER for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, has been brought to hospital by ambulance after becoming ill at the informal meeting of the EU Presidency held at the University of Limerick. The ambulance was called to UL this morning shortly after the meetings had begun. Minister O’Donovan was hosting a meeting of EU telecommunications ministers at the UL Sports Arena. A press conference had to be cancelled this afternoon due to Minister O’Donovan taking ill.

ONLY three weeks into a season which has already seen mixed results and significant off-field uncertainty, Munster’s young players have supplied some much-needed positivity. NA PIARSAIGH will face Kilmallock in the 2026 Limerick County Senior Hurling Championship final after both sides came through their semi-final clashes. Kilmallock booked their place in the decider with a 2-19 to 2-17 victory over Monaleen in a closely contested encounter on Sunday, October 11, at the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Second-half goals from Oisín O’Reilly and Pierce Connery proved crucial for the Balbec, who will contest their first county final since 2022.

THE GOVERNMENT has released a statement saying that they remain “fully committed” to entering pay talks with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), Public Services Committee (PSC), and other representative associations. This comes ahead of a major public sector strike taking place tomorrow, October 14. It is expected that more than 300,000 public sector workers, including nurses, doctors, teachers and civil servants, will take part in the strike.

UNIVERSITY Concert Hall (UCH) has been nominated for the chance to retain their Customer Experience Excellence Award this year, marking its third year of nomination. Limerick Chamber have confirmed the shortlist of businesses based in the Mid-West of Ireland for its 15th annual Regional Business Award this morning. UCH at the University of Limerick, the winner of the Customer Experience Excellence Award 2025,  is the only business to be nominated with the chance to retain its award this year.

UNIVERSITY of Limerick students welcomed the arrival of EU telecommunications ministers to the campus this morning, saying the event gives them a sense of representation in discussions on Europe’s digital future. Gardaí were posted outside the UL Arena, where the ministers arrived in convoys from 8am on Tuesday morning. UL students spoke to Limerick Voice about the significance of the event.

THE REPUBLIC of Ireland welcomes Kazakhstan to Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh tonight as they look to secure a place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup European play-off final. Head coach Carla Ward has confirmed that Ireland have a fully fit squad available with Katie McCabe, Denise O’Sullivan and Marissa Sheva all returning after missing the first leg through suspension.

OVER 160 schools are expected to close across Limerick tomorrow as public sector strike action gets underway. More than 140 primary schools and a further 28 secondary schools are expected to be affected by the industrial action. The widespread closures are causing significant concern for parents, many of whom are struggling to secure childcare arrangements for the day.
